Contact name not showing

I have an annoying problem with my contacts-application. Sometimes when I get a call from a saved contact, ONLY the number is displayed as if it was an unsaved number. This also happends sometimes when I call a contact from my phonebook, it only displays the number and not the name.
This even happends when I call a number/contact from my "Recent calls"-list. Both outgoing and incoming calls.

It seems that the contacts-application sometimes does not link with the saved contacts.
To me this happends on random and I have not been able to figure out why and when.
I have recently changed phone operator and got a new SIM-card... the problem occured both before and after.
I have updated the firmware to the latest one but the problem still remains.

I have searched for this problem and all I can find is that I have to make sure I don't have the number saved twice on different contact-names. I have done this and am sure that I DO NOT have duplicate items.

Only happends on my E72, never on my N82.

Re: Contact name not showing

I have exactly the same problem on my 6710 NAVIGATOR. Hope someone in NOKIA will look at the problem and give a solution. It is rarely annoying. :smileysad:.

Re: Contact name not showing

Usually this problem indicates duplicated contacts. Either two contacts with the same phone number in your phone memory, or one in your sim and one in your phone memory. Are you sure this is not the case? Try deleting all the numbers from the sim, for instance? (back up if necessary!)

Re: Contact name not showing

Thank you counselor for your advice. I had some duplicated contacts. I have removed them and now it works again.

Re: Contact name not showing

Thank you for your reply... but like I wrote, I have already checked that problem... And that IS NOT the case for me :smileysad:

After some further testing... I still have not been able to figure out this problem.

I have removed the "+46" and replaced it with a "0" on all my contacts (country number for Sweden).

Also removed all the spaces I had between numbers but the error still occurs from time to time.

I can't figure out when or the logic behind it, to me it's just random!

Re: Contact name not showing

Strange. You say it seems random, do you mean that sometimes a certain contact will work, and other times not?

Are there any apps that you use that use your contacts list and that are on your memory card instead of your phone memory? Fring and Nimbuzz come to mind...

Re: Contact name not showing

Exactly. Sometimes a contact will work and the next minute the same contact only shows up as a "new" number. Both incoming and outgoing.

However, when I call someone via my phonebook, the name always shows up, but not always if I call them via the "Recent calls"-list.

The only apps I've installed are Opera Mobile, Y-Browser, Papyrus and Handy Calendar. All are installed on the phone memory.

Re: Contact name not showing

Just to add one more thing... This problem does not occur with SMS'.

The sender is always displayed as a name, no matter how the number is saved.

Any other ideas?

Re: Contact name not showing

Not really, sorry. You could always try a hard reset, but personally I think that's a pain too, so it's your choice. I suppose it also depends on how frequently it occurs - if it's really so often that it's annoying, you might try a hard reset. My E72 certainly never seems to do it. I have Opera Mobile too, and have had Handy Calendar. Firmware 22.007.

To be honest, to me it sounds like a genuine bug in the contacts application, which probably means waiting for the next firmware update.

Re: Contact name not showing

copy all the numbers from sim to tel then erase all from sim. The hard way is creating a back up of all contacts, delete all then add them 1 by 1 manually :smileytongue:
cheers

Re: Contact name not showing

Yeah, but I doubt a hard reset will do it...

Could it be that I use my country-prefix in my saved contacts?

I do not have any numbers saved on my SIM-card as it is a brand new SIM-card. I recently changed operators.

(The problem was there before the change and after as well, as mentioned above :smileyhappy: )

Re: Contact name not showing

[ Edited ]

I may have figured out a fix for this problem. Or at least a band-aid to throw on it when it happens.

Be sure to remove all other contacts with the same number and name from the address book. Just make sure there isn't a duplicate to mess this up when you try. DO NOT remove the unnamed number from the recent called or received list yet!

Go to your address book, click on "UNNAMED" (or whatever it says for your phone. was at the very bottom of my address book), rename the unnamed contact and add it to your address book from there.

This should add the contacts name again, and should MAKE the phone rename the unnamed numbers that are coming up. But can be a pain when it's multiple numbers that are nameless. It does work though, and it allows ringtones for each contact to function again too.

So anytime a number that should be in your address book doesn't have a call id, add it again with those steps and it will work. If it doesn't ill recheck my steps to be sure I typed this correctly.

Re: Contact name not showing

@lyserg

It shouldn't matter whether or not you have the country-prefix in your saved contacts. I have that too and have done so for years with multiple phones, now including the E72. Everything works fine here.

tomservo: Thank you, I will try that now, the problem just occured. Let's hope it works as a temporary fix until they fix this issue in the firmware :smileyhappy:

sanderxpander: Yeah, that's what I thought as well and that is how I've been saving all my numbers in the past for years too.

Re: Contact name not showing

do not hesitate. i have the same problem since firmwareupdate on my e72.

it is not possible any more to type the name in start screen. nothing appears. if you write an sms, every thing works.

i now have the "search" in start-screen to do something "like that" - very annoying...

Re: Contact name not showing

Has anyone heard anything about if this is going to be included as a fix in the new firmware? And anything about a date of a new firmware? :smileyhappy:

Re: Contact name not showing

I recently had to find an existing contact by trawling through sent SMS messages. His name and number were there but not in contacts! It's not possible to "use number" from an SMS so I had to view the "message details", write down the phone number and then manually dial that number. Magically the phone then "remembered" the contact......

You couldn't make this stuff up. On a positive note the leather hand-strap supplied with the phone appears to be well made.

Re: Contact name not showing

The Contact part of this phone is completely messed up.

Random issues of Contact search not working and I can also confirm issues with name not showing when recieving calls.

Exact same contacts and sim card which earlier worked perfectly on my HTC. Now on my E72 it's a pain in the....

Duplicate contactcs...? Come on! Why in earth should this be a issue on a Premium Business Phone of 2009????

Face it: It's bugs, flaws and bad programming.

Nokia: GO FIX IT! :smileymad:

Re: Contact name not showing

Ok, this is beginning to be VERY FRUSTRATING!

Seems to be such an easy little thing to fix?!

And it is not even fixed in the new firmware which I upgraded to yesterday?!

I mean, come on, what is wrong with you?

I upgraded to the 031.023 firmware yesterday but this **bleep** problem is still there? Amazing.

Everytime I call someone FROM the addressbook everything is fine, but when I call the same contact from my "recent calls" list, it does not show up as a contact name, only as a number as if it was not saved. The same for incoming calls sometimes and sometimes it works.
