What can happen is that your handset is not for your region, the product code is simply not designed to have that language installed, and someone else prior to you getting the phone has installed the language in that handset, when you updated the phone, it returns to the original "product code" defined languages.

Click on the above thread it will tell you what you need to do.
You could go back to where you got the handset from and ask some questions as to the handsets origin, a quick Google search will of the product code will also give you an indication of the origin of the handset.
Shunts...

I have the exact same problem! I lost my chinese and gained philipino instead!!!
This phone was bought at a phone market in Beijing and the phone code shows me that it is an Australian phone
0560657: RM-346 APAC-S AUSTRALIA N342 GREY STEEL
Do you think I can take it to a nokia shop and they can re-install Chinese for me? Will it mess up any of the other features?
I also lost the ability to use my CONTACTS button...it is basically just a button now...has nothing that it recognises. My contacts are still in my phone because when I send a text message it knows who to send it to, but I cannot actually see them in a list.
Any ideas for how to get that sorted?
Thank you?!
