Advice - Buying E71 or E72?

Hi,

I have long thought about buying a smartphone. The choice is between E71 and E72. What makes me think about E71 is because it has been out on the market longer than the E72, and hopefully work more satisfying. I have four application areas of use.

  • Sync of Gmail - Mail, Contacts and Calendar
  • Browse the internet from the subway etc.
  • Using GPS in my hometown, only when walking
  • Making voice calls

E72 has some additional features that would been nice to have, for example 3.5mm jack, better camera and faster processor, a litte bit different GUI and HTML support in the email client. These features are only fun to have, but nothing I need. I do not think I will manage to have a phone that constantly causes trouble, it will make me mad. I have previously had a variety of phones with software problems and I can not cope with another one.

Is it wise to buy an E72, which is recently launched and with a variety of software problems? Or should I buy E71 instead?

Re: Advice - Buying E71 or E72?

Based on your areas of usage, I believe the E71 to be more than sufficient enough for you. You pretty much answered your own question, and I would have answered the same. :smileyhappy:

Besides the E71 at its current price is pretty much a steal.

If you want the E72, I suggest giving it a few months for all the hardware kinks and bugs to be sorted out first. I did so before buying my E55 and it has none of the software and hardware issues reported on this board.

Good advice Capt Jon. Actually the E55/E52 wouldn't be a bad choice for the OP as well. It does everything he wants and it is also smaller and has better battery life. Decision will be down to keyboard preference.

Re: Advice - Buying E71 or E72?... or N900

I am in the same boat and very much doubt that an easy answer will come! I have been monitoring recent E72 posts ( I wanted to buy this phone), but despite excellent review it seems that the users are going mad about software problems. Nokia tech people should have an honest response to what is really going on! It is beyond me why Nokia does not care about its potential customers and why they do not address the issues people have been having with E72. What I mean is that if there is an issue with firmware then they should acknowledge it and say that they are working on a fix - it is that simple.

On a positive side - do not forget that people who have no problems do not come to this forum - they just enjoy using thier device, so what you see here is not representative!

I am also seriously considering N900 as I am a UNIX/Linux user and this device sound superb , but again I want to wait and see. Also I am very much concerned about the battery life - I simply cannot recharge my phone daily. Also I need full Mac support, which is missing here!

[ Edited ]

Everyone that has posted has interesting thoughts and advices regarding the selection of telephone.

I have a history with 9300, E61 and E61i in my previous jobs and can not simply be without a keyboard. This phone will however be used as my private phone. Therefore it´s important for me that it works, since it will be purchased by me.

Having to buy a phone that is launched over a year ago, only so it should work is horrible. The idea has struck me more than once to wait, just because of the software-related issues. But I feel cheated  by Nokia even though I havent bought a phone yet. The options available are:

  • Buy a phone that does not work or have weaknesses, just because Nokia had to put a new phone on the market in order to not lose market shares against their competitors.

  • Buy an old phone that works, but are missing functions that should be available 2009/2010.

Re: Advice - Buying E71 or E72?

kallo123, this is exactly why I think that waiting a little bit is important. I am also planning to buy this phone for private use and would hate to spend so much money on something that does not work. However, I am certainly not buying E71 -- technology changes so fast that buying an old device ( as well as an old computer) is not very practical, unless one is prepared to buy a new phone after 12 months...

Maemo is without a doubt a future of Nokia ( if such future exist), but N900 is a bit raw right now to spend 600 EUR on it!

Re: Advice - Buying E71 or E72?

E72 has something that E71 does not have and which is extremely important for me: the sepparated "Ctrl" key. This allows for shortcuts to be used on texting (Ctrl+C: Copy, Ctrl+X: Cut, Ctrl+V: Paste, Ctrl+arrow: jump to next word, etc). This has prevented me to buy a E71 and is making me endure all bugs on E72 hoping for a better software in the near future. Just another issue to consider on your decision.

I can not recommend any Nokia device. Have you considered after-sales support? For Nokia it simply does not exsist. Sure they have a warranty and repair centers but anything beyond simple issues can not be resolved.

IMO E 71 is sufficient for all your needs; however if you yearn for a better resolution camera and a faster processor go for the E 72

Re: Advice - Buying E71 or E72?

I bought a E72 a few weeks ago and do indeed struggle with plenty of issues and instabilities:-(

Crashed and malfunctions, a reboot is need many time...

So, I would also suggest to wait.

About the the new Ctrl key in the E72: The E71 has it as well, you just need to press the function key (bottom left corner).

If you press the function key first (dont keep it pressed), then the Chr/Ctrl button plus C or V or X, copy, paste&cut works as usual.

Re: Advice - Buying E71 or E72?

Funny that you mentioned Android because I was just thinking about the same.

E71 is not an option anymore. E72 will be if all the major bugs are sorted out this year. I really doubt that they will be since E52 are still suffering from the same bugs that has been reported over and over again. The noise cancellation bug is one of them and I have seen reports from other discussion boards that this is also a problem for E72.

E72 in January if the major bugs are sorted out. Otherwise I will switch to Android and a completely different platform.

I have a E55 since October and never had a 'noise cancellation bug'. Works well even in busy areas like Oxford Street and construction sites.
