9300i internet radio

I'm trying to find a plug in that will let me listen to radio staions via the internet (most urgently football on BBc radio 5), Most require real/wMP plugins neither of which seem to be available...

Any ideas ?

Re: 9300i internet radio

Nokia 9300i has Realplayer, it should work with real streams.

Re: 9300i internet radio

Maybe that is beacause their broadcastings over the web are setup so that they will work with Internet Explorer, Mozilla etc.

What is the error message saying?

A pretty common mistake it that the webpage is setup incorrect for streaming to phones. In that case the web owner must configure the web server to send correct MIME types in HTTP headers. The devices look for the MIME type to determine what to do with the files, so probably the phone recognizes the file but doesn´t know that it should use Realplayer to open it.

Re: 9300i internet radio

hi teurastaja,

pop up error message reads - JavaScript, you either do not have the real player or the real player plugin installed

then it auto directs me to a help page :smileysurprised:(

I have a feeling this just isn't going to happen...

Re: 9300i internet radio

this is just an idea (from a prospective 9300i buyer who likes bbc radio online) but have you tried opening real player and then 'opening the stream' by typing in the url of the show you want to listen to?

this works with realplayer on a pc/mac (on my mac it's "open location" in the file menu). the url would look something like
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/shows/rpms/radio4/frontrow.ram
and it might get around the problem of the built in opera browser not realising that it has to launch realplayer. of course it depends on the mobile phone version of realplayer having something like the 'open location' command built in.

Please read my previous post, which pretty much cover the answer on your post ;-)

Re: 9300i internet radio - workaround!

No doubt teurastaja is right about the technicalities of why it won't work straight from the browser, but I have found a workaround for anyone interested. It's initially a little bit fiddly, but once you've set it up on your 9300i it seems to work fine.

When you click an audio link on the BBC website it launches the BBC Radio Player - a web page with an embedded real player. But there are also links labelled "listen using stand-alone Real Player" (just below the embedded player). On a desktop PC/Mac, you'll need to make a note of the URLs that these labels point to for any BBC radio live/recorded show you would like to listen to.

So, to take martinh's example of Radio Five Live:

1. On a desktop computer, open up the BBC Radio Player and navigate to Five Live. Hover over "Listen using stand-alone Real Player" with your mouse and make a note of the URL. I get http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/live/surestream_int.ram (might be a slightly different if you are in the UK, due to sports rights).

2. Fire up the built in web browser on your 9300i and enter that URL into it. It will launch Real Player, and, voila, the radio plays. Yay!

3. Now save it and other URLs for future reference.
You can either make them bookmarks in the web browser, or, in Real Player, click stop and then press the menu button/File/Save link as... and give it a name, like BBC Five Live. To find this file later, go to the Desk, then Office, and File manager. The Real Player files are in Communicator/My files. (Must be a quicker way to get to them, but I only bought this phone yesterday...). From there click on the file, real player launches, creates an internet connection and plays the file.

4. Happy listening.

you might want to show the actual URL's there as opposed to the links :smileywink:

Re: 9300i internet radio - workaround!

i just tried this out, but i keep getting a message saying

Note

Format not supported in opr0003Z.ram

or. i enter the address and realplayer prompts me to select a connection, which i do,then i get an error saying couldnt play stream.

i found that you need to disconnect from the internet as soon as real player opens, looks like they cant both use the same connection (the browser and realplayer that is.)

Re: 9300i internet radio - workaround! - WEP?

Rufao, that's strange, that hasn't happened to me yet.

I'm finding this workaround works brilliantly on my home wifi network (no encryption, hidden SSID and mac address filtering) but the few times I tried it in the office it wouldn't work. The office network has WEP encryption and I was wondering whether the combination of encryption and playing an audio stream was too much for the 9300i's slowish processor? Has anyone got this to work on an encrypted wifi network? cheers.

And Seraphim, if you're using a 9300, are you connecting to the internet using GPRS? Just interested.

Re: 9300i internet radio - workaround!

rufao -> Are you sure you are using a GPRS internet connection and not GPRS WAP as accesspoint?`

A possible cause could also be if your phone is 'branded', cause then sometimes the operator restricts the phone to access certain adresses/servers to benefit their own services.

Re: 9300i internet radio - workaround!

i am using wep also. maybe this is causing an issue?

the apn i use is O2 GPRS Internet. I tested this on a 770 and it works in the same way but a lot better :-)

If you are using an APN (accesspoint) that only allows WAP-access this probably causes the problem. You need to use a APN that gives you www-access.

Since this didn´t work I did not understand what you were just writing:

"I tested this on a 770 and it works in the same way but a lot better"...."

what do you mean with a lot better, if it still doesn´t work?!

Re: 9300i internet radio - workaround!

maybe i wasnt being clear.

the APN i use is o2 GPRS Internet.

I use WEP on my wireless network, i asked if this may have caused an issue as another user mentioned this also.

ton contrast this, i tested the same uri's with a 770 to see if they worked correctly. they did and over the same wireless network, so it isnt the resource that is the issue. right now i am either doing something wrong on the 9300i or the device is not great at handling this sort of function....
