When an alarm goes off, or when I get a call, or when an event happens, I'd like an option for the phone to play ONE single tone.

Tools / Settings / General / Personalization / Tones / Ringing Type
There is an option for Ring Once
I have not tried that option yet so I am not certain if it works just on phone calls or all ringing types.

Ringing, Ascending, Ring Once, Beep Once and Silent.
Try Ascending.

What happens when you want a voicemail notification to beep once, a phone call to play a ringtone at medium volume, and an email notification to play a tone twice and then stop? There's no way to do this, and that's amazing to me.
Blackberrys have had this kind of personalization for years, so I don't understand why one of Nokia's flagship phones can't manage to do more than one thing at a time.

I'm confused. My E71 has options for all of the above.
But I agree that there are amazing omissions as well - such as the call logs are incredibly lame.

If I go to Tools > Settings > General > Personalization > Tones, then that seems to be the main menu for dealing with tones and alerts and rings. There is one single setting for "Ringing type" (Ringing, Ascending, Ring once, Beep once, and Silent) and one setting for "Ringing volume" where you set the volume via a visual range.
Beyond that, you can then choose the tones you want for: Message alert, E-mail alert, Calendar alarm, and Clock alarm. These are tone choices only, and none of them can be independently adjusted for volume, duration, etc. The final choice in the menu as it relates to this conversation is a menu item to turn vibrate on/off.
Please post if you see something different where one can adjust these various rings, tones and alerts independently.

What happens when you want the phone ring to be an Ascending ringtone; a calendar alert to be a ringtone at a low volume; an email notification to beep three times; and, a clock alarm to play a ringtone once at a medium volume?
Again, the e71 seems to group alert sounds in 2 categories ... by Phone (where you can control the ringtone choice, volume, and duration), and by everything else, where the only choice is the choice of tone.

No, I see exactly the same options as you and I now understand what you're looking for.
I can only suggest a (tedious) workaround.
Create your tone files using an audio editor on your desktop and download them to the phone. Audacity is freeware for Mac/Linux/Windows and should be able to manage this relatively minor editing task.
(And while we're complaining about the ringtones, how about some way to prevent the entire MP3 library from being listed in the ringtone section?)

I can't but agree to this....
1) I would want my SMS to vibrate beep once and show up when I missed them
2) I would want my phone calls to vibrate beep once and show up when I missed them
3) I would want my Email not to give me any notification whatsoever (I get way too many of those)
Basically all 3 is not a problem, but you can't have them at the same time!
Vibrating is either ON or OFF. Indication light if I missed something is ON or OFF.
And somehow when vibrating is on, it also beeps?!?!!?
Great phone, but this is ridiculous!

Someday, maybe Nokia will make a MUCH NEEDED FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR NORTH AMERICA that fixes this tone personalization issue. Maybe now that the e71x victims are coming on board, they'll start investing in this terrible piece of junk.
Sure, it's got great battery life. The call quality is good. But to live with this phone as your business AND personal device, asking it to do a simple task like wake you up the way YOU would like to come out of sleep, it is an utter failure. Really, it's just unbelievable to me that a high-end phone cannot manage its various tones in unique ways.
Where is Nokia on these boards? Do they even read these issues? I wonder.
