The camera module in Nokia C7 is a full focus camera, using EDOF technology. This is very different from the AF module in Nokia Nseries devices such as Nokia N78 and Nokia N79.
You are correct in that there is no two-stage capture key. There are no moving parts in the camera (so it's actually faster to capture an image than AF modules), and everything from around 1m to infinity is in focus (so it's easier to take "no hassle" pictures). The downside is that there is no close-up mode.
Don't underestimate the quality of images this camera is capable of though - it's a great camera!
There's an interesting write-up about this technology at http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/12136

To say that pics the EDoF camera of the C7 C6-01 etc take are bad is completely wrong.
EDoF (Extended Depth of Field) cameras are incredibly good but they are not eer going to be as good as full focus cameras. These are not camera for the photo expert but they are good enough for most people.
There is another good write up and explanation here...

There is a good review of the C7 camera hee...

This is a good camera... just not as good as the N8... except with video when it is better than the N8!!!

You can find the differences between fixed and auto focus cameras and the key issue of E7's cam. Click here to read it at symbiandreams.com (http://www.symbiandreams.com/nokia-phones/e-series
It is very unfair to have a fixed focus cam for a device that has most of the best features to use as all in all gadget .

I have been comparing C7 and my N78 photos for months now. There is not a chance in hell, that C7's camera is better.
Almost everyone I know, uses AF to take photos of some text, information, documents. With an AF camera the photo is almost as good as a scan.
I have been trying to figure out for weeks, why has Nokia made such a stupid step in phone development. For a 370 eur phone this doesn't make any sense.
Someone please enlighten me. What is the point in an edof camera in an 370 eur phone? I wouldn't be complaining if it were max 200 eur.

Hi marcek6
It sounds as though you need an AF camera, and on that basis, Nokia C7 is not the phone for you. We have a range of different devices to cover a range of different users.
Many users never take photos of text, or documents - they just want great pics with ease. And for those users, the camera in Nokia C7 is ideal.
You ask why the full focus camera was chosen for Nokia C7. It was chosen because of its small size, and this was critical to the overall design of the device. And it does take great pictures - have you tried it?
The compromise is that it does not support close-up mode. For many users that is an acceptable compromise, but from what you say, it is not acceptable to you.

Yes the almighty majority.
I will probably go for the C6. But is AF going to become only as an exclusive for flagships such as N8, N97 in the future?
And maybe another hypothetical question: if AF was eliminated for the sake of user friendliness, will symbian also be "tweaked" to reach the UI friendliness everybody is expecting from symbian?
Personally I like symbian, It's a great platform with a lot of possibilities, albeit the buginess upon new launch...
Oh, and thanks for the rep's.

Hi marcek6
Just to be clear... in the case of Nokia C7, AF was not excluded for the sake of user friendliness... it was excluded on the basis of its size impact on the overall design.
And yes, you can expect UI improvements to come with future software updates.

Well, if it must..
I was really hoping you would have any kind of info, if there will be any AF upcoming phones from Nokia (I'm thinking high-midrange). By the looks of it I would say no. I'm close to buying C6, it's really superior with all of it's functions, but the ARM on it is rather weak compared to C7, N8, C6-01 etc.
Cheers!

looks like i m having the same the same problems than you.
i also need autofocus for documents and other pictures, but either we can buy an expensive n8 (i don t need 12 mp, 5mp would do)
or we have to choose a non symbian 3, which will have only 128 mb ram (around 40-50 free) like e72, x6 or c6-00
i think that nokia needs more symbian 3 phones to choose from. maybe you could save money with a lcd instead of amoled like many androids do! just dont save money on the battery because that s extremely important for business or multimedia.
