switching off wlan scanning permently on a nokia 5800

Can you switch off wlan scanning off permently. i usually disconnect it at the wlan wizard,but after a couple of minutes it has switched its self back on.If this is not possible can you delete your email from the phone as it is driving me crazy getting an alert with every email i recieve,also it seems to drain the battery very quickly
