Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

All the S60 3rd Edition Nseries phones will work as an USB drive, if you select the "Data transfer" mode when connecting (and not, e.g., "PC Suite"). That means these models: N71, N73, N80, N91, N92, N93.

N70, N72 and N90 are S60 2nd Edition models.

Also the 3250, 5500, E50, 60, E61 and E70 are S60 3rd Edition models (even if not in the Nseries).

Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

I have an E61, and I've connected it (in data transfer mode) to my SUSE Linux 10.0 system. It does *not* appear as a USB drive (disappointingly).

If I do 'lsusb', it shows that the a Nokia device is connected, so SUSE has seen it, it just doesn't recognise it as a USB drive. Anyone have any suggestions how to get it to appear as a drive? Thanks a lot in advance,

Cheers, Tony.

Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

Just to make it more interesting, my SUSE 10.0 system runs VMware Server, and a SUSE 10.1 guest virtual machine complained that it couldn't get access to the USB storage because of the SUSE 10.0 host had grabbed it. So I disabled access from the USB host ("rmmod usb_storage") and connected the SUSE 10.1 guest to the USB device, but it still didn't show up as a USB disk.

So, SUSE Linux apparently sees the USB device, knows that it is a storage device, but still isn't able to mount it as a disk. I don't have any immediate idea as to what the problem is. Anyone else know? Thanks a lot in advance,

Cheers, Tony.

Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

The N90 is not based on S60 3rd Edition, but an earlier release, which does not have "USB mass storage" support built-in.

Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

Hi Petrib

I have N72.. Do you mean that I cannot connect it to Linux as a USB modem since it is S60 2nd edition.. Is there any way to use N72 as USB modem to access internet through GPRS on Linux??

Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

Correct (no way to use as USB modem, unless and until someone develops Linux cable and modem drivers for the phone and cable).

I've just got myself an N95 8GB and I would just like to add my name as a non winows user (Ubuntu) who feels nokia should be doing more for the open source community esspecially with their recent linux based tablets.

Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

Hello there, I have purposely singed up on this forum to just express my disgust with Nokia policy on most of their phones regarding of OS transparency. I am Linux user and I feel discriminated by Nokia because of my OS choice. I have made an unfortunate choice of purchasing N72 for my sister. It is great phone, but fails greatly as a smart phone, in fact it does not deserve to be named smart phone for one simple reason - you cannot use it without Windows. Can you please explain to me - what is the point of having memory card and USB interface if the device does not behave as transparent mass storage? The phone works as MP3 player and Camera but how the hell I am supposed to transfer files over? I personally bought Nokia phones for many years because of the good hardware. No doubt they are still good hardware, but if software fails greatly it just does not matter how good hardware is, the whole product will fail, just look at ATI and their drivers.
Also because I could not transfer files over on Linux system, I had to resort to find a Windows system, and I would like to point out that Nokia PC Suite fails greatly on the level of UI design, why do you guys have to design everything with assumption that users are idiots? Also it buries itself in system and is more like nagging Norton Anti-virus (which is another example of failure). Also transfer was horribly slow, and I am sure I read somewhere that it was USB 2.0 spec.
If I had Mass Storage support on that phone I would close my eyes on the fact that it crashes every second time while using video mode (and needs battery pulled out to reset - power button does not respond), and the whole phone is slow (which brings another software issue - but this time it is on the phone)....
Now when my friends ask me for advice on which phone to buy I will reconsider recommending Nokia (unless there is a software update for the phone that supports USB mass storage and which fixes all the slowness and crashes).

I am sorry if I offended anyone in this rant, but I have wasted over 10 hours trying to figure out how to make this phone work with my system, and I am pretty much frustrated to the point of having a desire to throw the phone out of the window. If you convert these 10 hours to what I could of earn on the job I would probably be able to buy another phone by now.

Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

Hello,

Another linux user chiming in to be counted.

I can use my phone (N95 8GB) as a storage device via USB and bluetooth, but i am still looking for solutions to:

- sync contacts and calendar
- manage pictures
- manage music
- make full phone backups and install new firmware.

So far i have found that:

- nokia supports SyncML for contacts and calendar syncing. There are a number of open source tools out there (OpenSync, Funambol) which might be able to help.

- i *think* the media player is MPI (Music Player Interface - a MS* "standard"?) compatible, and there are some solutions out there to manage mpi devices from linux using e.g. amarok.

Haven't looked into the other two yet.

In my opinion, nokia should *not* try to release a version of PC Suite for linux as it is simply a **bleep**tastic peice of software (sorry nokia devs, but then again who cares, it's not like writing software for windows is really a core competency of the Nokia corporation, is it?). Instead they should publish more information to allow open source devs to write their own clients, and they should make "touchy" stuff like firmware upgrades etc available straight to the phone (i.e. without requiring a pc - just using wifi or packet data. I think this might even be possible already, no?)

Just my two cents,
Regs,
/t

Re: is it possible to connect N series to linux pc

Hey there my friend.. I totally agree with you. Nokia has become a bit like Microsoft.. it owned most of the market, so it languished behind and stopped innovating, it wasn't until recently that these 2 companies started thinking about moving forward after the onslaught of alternative, competitive (and most probably better) products. unfortunately, nokia has many hardware downs two (you try fixing a speaker in the N78 without having to pay for all the parts), sticky keys, bad wifi reception, slow data transfer rate (to windows, almost impossible otherwise), numerous restarts and dead batteries.. Nokia did a good thing by open sourcing the symbian operating system (although it probably was a last measure act to save the aging OS) the move came almost too late.. It's competitors have all but zapped past it (of course excluding WinMo!) in innovation. It tried to restore its quality with the N97, but it came as a late attempt to save face. Whereas the N900 linux-based Maemo is really good. So if Nokia should learn a lesson from its experience, it would try to open up on its drivers and provide some means for open source developers to push it beyond "if is connected, then why can't I access my files?!" issue..
