internet access help on e63

hi guys! I recently purchased a Nokia e63 and i want to connect it to the Internet through wireless LAN through my BSNL router. The model no. of the router is "wa3002g1". Whenever i try to connect my mobile to the web through the router the mobile shows a "no gateway reply" error. When i use this router to connect to the internet through my computer i have to provide my username and password provided to me by my isp and then click on the "connect" button. Hope this information is enough. Please tell me the necessary settings i have to make in the modem or my phone. please help!

Re: internet access help on e63

Hi akshayf, I have an e75 but I believe it's the same utilities we so here goes:

Firstyou should check if your router allows for you to Add a Wireless Device withWPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup).  You’ll dothis by going to your router’s admin page and clicking on wirelesssettings.  If so, and you know that youhaven’t done anything with regard to this, on your nokia device presssettings-> connection-> destinations-> internet; after selectinginternet go to the WLAN definition that you may already have and delete it. Goback up one page to “Access Point” and re-create the access point.  I created mine using a shared key (WPA-psk).  At this point you should have your nokiaphone set-up a pin (through WPS) with the router.  They will share this information which is anumber consisting of about 14 digits. Without this your phone may work if you go on to do below; but in a casewhere you have a persistent connection, such as music being played on theinternet radio, the router will continually question the phone if few packetsor so as to what is it & does it have permission even though it has theshared-key & the phone will give up/ terminate the connection.

NoteI use a D-Link DIR-615 router & a TrendnetTEW-340APB router in repeatermode.

2Go into the router with your browser to see the settings. For me, this is donewith the URL I’ve set my router to http://192.168.0.11 as I purchased two routers with my nokia e75,one for upstairs one for downstairs; and they’re of different manufacturers,Trendnet makes routers that will repeat the broadcast of another router just soas to broaden range.  Anyhow, you need toaccess the administration page of your router. You will need the ID andpassword to admin the router settings. If you had used a D-Link router it wouldbe what you should have noted on the CD sleeve.

3Find the wireless interface settings. Which is settings-> connection-> destinations-> internet; thenselect/ choose edit. Note the security settings - set them up if you have to -most people use WPA-PSK (like myself) which is the "shared key"approach.  There are a lot of wirelesssetups where I live and I think this is the better method.

4It's helpful to also make sure that the SSID is set to something you willrecognise on your phone (this is the ID string that will display when yousearch for available WLANs), and that the SSID will be tagged"Public" or "Broadcast" - otherwise you will not see it onthe phone.

5Before you go to the phone, go back to Windows, bring up a Command pane [ Start– Control Panel – Network Connections – right click on your Lan or High-Speedconnection icon this is usually called Local Area Connection – click on Status– then click on support]. Look for three things:

your"IP address" (mine was 192.168.0.11 because my home network isprepared for multiple devices to connect to multiple access points, but don’tworry just note yours)

thesubnet mask (mine was 255.255.255.0)
the "Default Gateway" (mine was 192.168.0.1 because that is thepre-set IP address for the router)
the "DNS server address" (mine was 192.168.0.1, same as previous).

PHONE[Nokia E series are all similar - I don't know about others]:

1 From the menu go [ Connectivity - Connection manager - Available WLANs ] andsee what you get - you should be able to see the SSID you entered above whenthe search is done.

2 Return (to the top of the menu) and go to where you can edit the propertiesof access points [ Tools - Settings - Connection - Access points ] and selectyour SSID. You need the following settings:

Connection name: Use the SSID? Or any term that is useful for you (HomeLAN,OfficeLAN?}
Data bearer: "Wireless LAN"
WLAN network name: This will be the SSID
Network status: This will be "Public"
WLAN network mode: "Infrastructure"
WLAN security mode: "WPA/WPA2" (if you chose the WPA-PSK setting inthe router)
WLAN security settings: Select this and you will see a sub-menu:
WPA mode: "Pre-shared key"
Pre-shared key: You will see some
asterisks (***) but you can edit
this to make sure it is the same
as you entered in the router
(other settings here are not critical)
Go back to the Access point data
settings (up one level)

3This is where the real answer to the problem comes ...
From the "Access point" details [if you get lost it's Tools -Settings - Connection - Access points again] , choose [ Options - Advancedsettings - IPv4 settings ] and you will find the following:

PhoneIP address: Enter a number
192.168.0.nnn where nnn is different
to anything else on your network -
try adding a small number to the IP
address you found for your PC.
I used 192.168.0.101 and it works fine.

Subnet mask: Must be set to 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: Must be set to the
router IP address (mine was 192.168.0.11) DNS address: there are two, primaryand
secondary - it should be sufficient to put
the router IP address (mine was 192.168.0.11) in as primary. If you don’t haveany other routers leave the secondary blank; if you do, put the IP address ofthe second router/access point as secondary. That way when walk through your home you may see the number of accesspoint counter go from 1 to 2, and back wherever you’re out of range of one.

Youdo not need to change any other advanced settings.

Re: internet access help on e63

Oh yes, akshayf. As for the username & password situation, you should be able to have windows store this information & connect to your isp automatically.  Then you may need to have your pc made to be the router for this type of connect internet service.  Your ISP has firewalled their service.  The type of connection I use is a 15mbps connection that any computer can just plug into the modem & get internet.

So, after you install a router card & enter the password to your LAN connection you should be fine, once you leave the PC on.  It the router card should be able to serve the internet to the same PC and every other device that can connect to that PC router card, which should have smc connector antennas on them.

Re: internet access help on e63

Finally i got victory over the error. Heres what i did

I changed my router setting from BRIDGE MODE to PPPoA/PPPoE. by doing this i had to save my username and password(given by ISP) in the router. This connection is now ON as soon as i start my modem.

Beware though , by this method anyone, YES, ANYONE! with a wi fi device would be able to connect to the internet from your account since the username and password are saved in the router.

I strongly suggest  that you protect your network by WPA protection as WEP is now obsolet. :smileyhappy:Leave a post if you have any problem and click the kudos tab if it helped U.

Re: internet access help on e63

eldispaul;

the ip address on your phone must be within the range of your router.  So, if the router's IP address is 192.165.0.4; the phone must work on something like 192.165.0.x; The number x will be the unique identifier of all devices that would be connecting to the router.

Were this example is concerned, the unique address number of your phone cannot be the same as the router itself, which is 4; and it cannot be the same as the DHCP numbers; because those are the actual pathways your device would use to stream data from the internet.

I think I should post some additional information on the actual address numbers later, I don't have it in front of me right now, but for now make the identifying number of your phone be a number divisible by 2.

Re: internet access help on e63

Congrats Akshayf;

I purchased a third router and I've found that all three have extra functions, that the other don't have. Yet this can be what makes our phones seem to not work.  I've clearly seen my trendnet router offer this thing of keeping the password for you, in order to access the internet service for you, but I am sure you can secure that password by making the adminstrator's password to the router unique (change it) then just WPA/WPA2 encryption and you should be fine where blocking other's from using your internet access.

Re: internet access help on e63

I would say it's the firmware that's the problem, coupled with the possible fact that you may have forgotten to decrypt the memory before updating the firmware.

Tell us some more. How did you set up your WLAN?

Re: internet access help on e63

  1. Thanks someone responded.
  2. I followed a set of directions given by Nokia help when I emailed them and did the following:
    a. Tried the WLAN Wizard first but that didn't work though it was before I got my OS upgraded recently
    b. Added a new Access Point through Tools-Settings-
Data Bearer = Wireless LAN (I use a Linksys Wireless--G Broadband Router model WRT54G)
WLAN Network Name: Took the SSID from the Router settings and inserted here
    Network Status: Public
    WLAN Network Mode: Infrastructure
WLAN Security Mode: WPA/WPA2 (WPA Personal is set up in the WLAN Router)
WLAN Security Settings: WPA/WPA2: Preshared Key
Pre-Shared Key: entered what is there in the WLAN Router settings
    WPA2 only Mode:  Off
    Advance Settings:
IPv4 Settings: Left both Phone IP address and DNS Address to Automatic
IPv6 Settings: Left this undisturbed (it shows Automatic against the DNS settings)
      Proxy Server address: None
      Proxy Server Port Number: 0

Now I go to WLAN Scanning and then it returns with No WLAN Network Found

Please help, thanks!

Re: internet access help on e63

Looking good. You've to enable router SSID visibility. Check MAC filtering. Turn off power saving in the advanced settings of WLAN on the E63.

Re: internet access help on e63

Hi,

While thanking you again for responding to my statements, I am yet unable to hit the Green Button for success is yet to come by. Taking your cues one by one:

Router SSID visibility = I guess you are referring to Router SSID Broadcast  under Basic Wireless Settings. Enable radio button is checked.

Wireless MAC Filter Disable is checked.

By power saving device, I guess you refer to the Show LAN Availability setting. This was showing No. I made it Yes with every 10 minutes.

What are we missing yet?

Look forward to yours,

Re: internet access help on e63

Turn off powersaving in the WLAN settings. Tools-> settings-> connection-> WLAN-> options-> advanced settings->yes-> powersaving-> off. Open the default browser, search WLAN, fill in the pre-shared key. If your E63 can't find the router, the problem is the router itself. Reset the router.

Re: internet access help on e63

Thanks again, I could reach the power saving option after disabling automatic configuration and have turned it off.

The shared code I have already embedded so I don't have to enter it, as was the case earlier before my phone got upgraded for OS.

Still, status quo. Can't find the WLAN.

Sorry for the continued bother!

Re: internet access help on e63

To respond to the second part of your solution, the Router seems fine as another mobile phone and a laptop have been riding the WiFi connection successfully all the while.

Re: internet access help on e63

I think it's time to reset the E63. Dial *#7370# 12345 reformat, you'll lose all data. Make a backup first and restore without the settings.

Re: internet access help on e63

Yesterday afternoon, I had been to the Nokia Service Centre where the phone was given last  week for attention plus reloading OS. They have responded that the failure of the phone to recognise a WLAN around is a hardware issue and are to revert today. So, not yet, let's not give up and I won't like to do an clear setting instructions, though must thank you for one more shot you are trying at it. Really great your tenacity, and fortunately me too hasn't given up on it.

The mail and calls to the Nokia service people didn't help but I hope later today I ought to have some answers that I will share with you.

Cheers!
