Nokia N900 and SAP

Since this N900 is only about 2 weeks away I was wondering if anything is known about using a rSAP carkit with the N900. Currently all the nokia models running Symbian S60 should work (fine).

Since the N900 is Maemo based, it's hard to find information if this is going to work or not. Seeying it is a nokia product and I have modern nokia carkit, you would expect it to work, but the truth might be a bit more complex then that.

So anyone (or nokia themselves). What is the status of rSAP, Remote Sim, Sim Access Profile regadering the nokia N900? My current carkit is an intergrated one in my Skoda Superb '09. Level III, so I can control it using steering wheel and navigation display. I have found out that these "premium" carkit modules from VAG (Company above Skoda which also makes the VW, Seat, etc. models) all use the same module which is only able to communicating using rSAP.

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

No respsone from anyone yet, including nokia... That is quite disappointing. No response for me means that currently, it has no support for it, as also stated by the released manual for the device and the FCC registration.

The release of the phone is comming ever closer and this is going to be a missed feature for a lot of people (anyone driving a modern (business) car)). I will advise against purchasing the phone if this does not get sorted out or some kind of time plan or vision is given into this regard.

Hope to see some comments official or not soon!

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

This is a user-to-user forum, all most of us know is what is published in the standard specs that have already been released.

If Nokia hasn't officially stated this informationj in any previously released information, then I doubt that the Nokia staff who are active here will be allowed to say anything further.

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

Probably your request should be addressed to a maemo specialized forum or comunity.

Take a look to http://maemo.org.

Cheers.

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

What good news indeed - rSAP is strangled by the Maemo Geeks!  The Google Summer student to work on rSAP last August ran away!!!  You ask for rSAP in Maemo Community - they give in and you may vote for rSAP in "Brainstorm". Then when the votes come to fast they simply re-set the vote!

Have approached at least 10 Nokia Execs too - but they won't budge - so rSAP is a NO_GO for the N900.

Then I was stricken by light!

Nokia will NOT make rSAP available to the N900, as their proprietary software will then become available as open source software....

So got myself the cheapest Nokia with rSAP - added a SIM-only prepaid for €10 and car battery loader AND set my N900 to forward to the car 'phone after 20 seconds.

Problems solved!

To hell with the bureaucrats! :smileyvery-happy:

PS:  One day the Android will get rSAP and then the software will be available anyway! (same platform).

Stupid Nokia Bureaucrats. They kill Tom Tom they think with their free Maps, but forget that the competition will put a knife in their back as well!

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

Hi Owled,

Thank you for your post, which is very helpful. I've just discovered the lack of SAP compatibility with my N900 and frankly I'm amazed that Nokia has decided to launch it without this function. So I'm going to follow your example. Which nokia phone have you gone for and how do you set the n900 to forward after 20 seconds.

Thank you in anticipation,

Mozlet

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

[ Edited ]

@  Mozlet,

I bought the 2730 and it works like a charm in my Skoda Superb II with the Columbus rSap system.

I subsequently bought the 5230 for my wife, but she found that one to be too advanced for her needs. So gave her the 2730,and kept the 5230 for the car. Must say I am not convinced yet that the 5230 can do what the (much cheaper 2730) does! The 5230 seems to need more attention, asking to confirm the rSAP at start up all the time (at least so far..., but may be, when I find time to do the pairing again, but starting from the 'phone instead of initiating it from the car system, it may reach the pairing status I want. So that it does not ask for confirmation all the time.

So i would say try the 2730,.

I leave that in the ashtray in the back of the car with the car loader - which latter I attach every 3 or 4 days to load the 'phone while driving. When I get out of the car I just turn the carkey and because the car retains the SIM-lock over the 'phone, there is no harm somebody might high-jack the 'phone, from outside the car, the Blue-Tooth stays engaged as well.  When I start the car it starts the pairing with the 'phone and this goes without any hassle and automatically - without any handling or interference by myself!

Hope this helps.

May be there are even cheaper Nokia 'phones, that have RSAP. My feeling says that the older models probably fit better with the German VAG cars (VW, Skoda, Audi, etc.) and that the newer touch-screen models have too many gadgets on board...

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

@ Mozlet,

Sorry, this leaves your question re forwarding!

In the N900, Tap the Folder-icon in the left top corner, select System/Settings, under Connectivity select the "Phone" button, under Call you will find the Forwarding selections available, when tapped you can select  the forwarding to the "car phone" number (insert the number you get when you buy the SIM/Prepaid (From ALDI Supermarkets for instance, €10 for 1 annum+ 4 months extra free "call only" AND Emercency Calls on that SIM !!)

Keep in mind that Forwarding may have to be a feature that your Phone Provider must offer. (Can you forward on your present Mobile?) (Check).

Should you require more features, then you may want to download the "Call Forwarding Applet" Version 1.0 = 112kb, (Utility Category) by Miko Methonen,  which you may find on the Maemo-Extras or Maemo-Extras-Devel  download facilities. (the descriptions are here:

http://maemo.org/packages/)

READ first about the possible dangers of downloading from these 2 sources at http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras. Be Careful!

Hope all this helps.

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

A@ Mozlet,

The Call Forwarding Applet will create a new entry next to the 'phone entry I described above (icon is a blue arrow in a curved form). It has more selections you can make.

Re: Nokia N900 and SAP

@MOzlet,

Just tried to pair the 5230 starting from the 'phone and must say that it now works PERFECT!

In the 'phone menu there is a 2nd (and 3rd) selection screen (with selections that the car option misses), where the Car can be "Authorized" - from there on no more password requests. Also set the 'phone to "Hidden", so that it only pairs with the car and denies all outside requests.

Owled.
