nokia superfan........iv specially signed in 2 thank you......was stuck on trying 2 connect to wlan since 2 days and thanks 2 you its worked........i simply followed step by step...........
creating a new acess point with the same info as your routers is the key.......its just that n8 doesnt pick the settings all by itself........n it doesnt say incorrect even if you enter the wrong key.....mine was a 26 digit long key 128bit.........
it just redifines the browsing experience.....n8 truly amazingly awesome......
cheers........

I have the same issue, the phone can connect to the wifi but IP address is assigned. I have used a static address and also removed all security on the router. I have asked Nokia to look into the issue but I am not holding my breath but if my Nokia n97 m, joggler, laptops and three other phones can connect without issue using wpa2/wpa it’s not the router.
PS I wouldn’t use wep as it very insecure.

Well, since a few of you are having this problem, I thought I would toss in my 2 cents worth:

I have the same problem and none of the tricks offered by some contributors has worked so far for me. Could Nokia, at long last, have a look into that matter ?!!!! Other phone brands work perfectly with any router, even the N900 ! What's the problem with Symbian ?
Such a bug is totally unacceptable nowadays....!

As i also have this problem i will go to the store were i bought the N8 and say that it is broken,it does not connect to wlan as easy as any other device. It connects to the router but then that is were it stops , no internet.." Invalid server name" have no idea what that is.
I have the settings i should have compared to the router. but still no luck....and why all this job, when any other device i have connects right away?????
Na this phone is broken ill give it back to the dealer , and after reading this forum and no Nokia support has said anything in here.. i guess i wont agree to take a new N8 ,, ill just demand to get my money back and look for a HTC instead.
Its too bad that Nokia are so uninterested in in what goes on in here.

SteveyB, I can report exactly the same as you. At first I thought it was just that the widgets and WRT stuff was really badly coded (probably true) but after noticing the phone becoming unresponsive over WiFi, I realised the problem is much greater.
I have fiddled with my router (Billion 7800N) and upgraded it to the newest firmware. I have tested the phone in offline mode and in online mode.
The only thing which improves the issue is downgrading from 802.11n to b (11 Mbps) OR deactiving WPA2-PSK security. With no security enabled I successfully downloaded hundreds of megabytes.
With WPA2-PSK [AES] enabled sometimes I can only download 500 KB...
This makes applications like Ovi Music, WebTV and WRT widgets useless and leads to the phone freezing or becoming unresponsive. I can force the issue by trying to disconnect from the WiFi -- then the phone needs an 8 sec button hold reboot.

You better use 802.11 b/g compatibility. Use channels between 1 and 9. WPA encryption is only to identify the device. It has nothing to do with download speed. In stead of WPA you can also use MAC filtering.

Guys....... I took the phone today and had the exact same problem.I read everything on the internet and especially here but nothing helped. The last thing i did was a major reset. And after that somehow everything went OK and i could use my WLAN at home.dont know why,but it was ok.If u have no other options than just try it....it helped me and now i m browsing without any problems
Heres how u make the RESET
Settigs>Phone>Phone Management>Factory Settings.........click restore ![]()
Hope it helps u ![]()

Try the following
When in WEB Browser press Options > Settings > General > Tap Access Point (for wifi 'Internet' will be chosen otherwise your carrier for WAP services) > Options > Select Access Point
it should show you your local access point choose that and presto it should work.
It worked for me!
If not then you might want to fiddle with it some more.

I noticed that when connected to my router I could ping my phone from another device but still got the "invalid server name", but I believe the issue is to do with the browser I managed to download Opera 10 and that worked, I have then messed around with all the nokia browser settings and got that working as well.
The problem is I'm not sure which one resolved the issue.
But it works fine now, also the issue only manifested it self when connecting to my BT Home hub wi-fi in a Nero coffee shop work without issue.

Spent the last 9 hours trying to get wlan working. Haven't yet seen what the phone has to offer as I've been working with wlan since I opened the box. The issue seems somewhat rare, but it exists.
Lets me connect to the WLAN server but when I try to browse the web, I get error message stating that the server is not valid. Could this be some kinf of encryption error? Maybe it's because I'm still using the original browser? ![]()
Here are my ADSL modem specs:
THOMSON ST780WLDXT
Interface Enabled:Yes
Interface Type:802.11b/g (tried b, g, b/g)
Actual Speed:54 Mbps
Band:2.4G Hz
Channel Selection:Auto (tried manual, channel 1)
Region:Europe
Channel:6
Allow multicast from Broadband Network:Yes
Broadcast Network Name:Yes
Allow New Devices:New stations are allowed (automatically)
Security Mode:WPA-PSK (tried WEP and disabled protection)
WPA-PSK Encryption:TKIP+AES
WPA-PSK Version:WPA+WPA2 (tried WPA, WPA2 separately)
for reference, I've seen in my n8 wlan sweatshop 1 person with the same modem and issue.

delete the wlan access point,
restore to factory setting
and re configure wlan
it works for me
Good luck

Folks with Thomson Speedtouch modem/router models (at least models TG585 and 780WL) have had plenty of "no gateway reply" or "invalid server name" type of problems and usually problems have been solvable by disabling the WMM (WLAN QoS) feature on the router. At least router firmware versions 6.x and 7.x have been problematic but I think if you are able to update to 8.x firmware then this "WMM" might no longer be an issue.
Thomson's web configuration interface might not have an option to disable the WMM but if you are comfortable using telnet to configure your Thomson modem/router then WMM can most likely be disabled via router's telnet command line interface.
Open up a telnet connection to your router. Default IP address of the router is probably 192.168.1.154 and login as Administrator (username: Administrator password: blank/none)
If username/password is not accepted (you have an ISP branded modem) try googling the default username and password for your specific modem.
Issue following commands after getting logged in to router CLI :
:wireless qos config mode=disabled
:saveall
Exit the telnet session and restart your router.
Following is probably irrelevant for Janappa's particular (Thomson) problem but I'm just adding some other generic potential reasons for "invalid server name" problems. These are not specific to Thomson modems/routers or any other specific router models.
"Invalid server name" or "No gateway reply" type of problems could be caused for example by:
1. DHCP server is not enabled on the router settings thus phone does not have an valid IP address.
2. WLAN network has been configured with WEP encyption and "open authentication" is in use but WEP key has been misconfigured on the phone. Phone will "connect" to WLAN but since "open authenticated" WEP provides no way for client to detect that WEP encryption key is incorrect, phone will not be able to pass any data through the connection even if it is "Connected" to the WLAN. Ensure that WEP key has been entered correctly (key length / key index, ascii/hex format, etc. variables easily cause mistakes). If "Shared" WEP authentication has been selected on the WLAN router settings then phone is at least able to detect the situation if WEP key provided by the user is not matching the one entered on the router.
3. MAC address filtering is enabled on the WLAN access point / router and phone's WLAN MAC address has not been added to the list of allowed MAC addresses. Usually MAC address filtering blocks WLAN connection completely (phone shows "connection failed", "unable to connect", "network not found" etc. error note). But depending on the MAC filter implementation it might also allow client to "connect" to WLAN but MAC address filtering might still block all traffic from this client leading to "no gateway reply" or "invalid server name" errors.
4. DNS forwarding problems. Some WLAN routers have "DNS forwarding" enabled by default meaning that router provides it's own IP address as an "DNS server address" to all DHCP clients and acts as an DNS forwarder between the client and actual DNS server located on the ISP's network.
Sometimes "DNS forwarding" might cause problems for clients ("invalid server name" / no gateway reply" errors). Try disabling the DNS forwarding from the router so that router's DHCP server provides the actual ISP DNS server address to the DHCP clients. Or as an extreme measure configure phone's advanced IAP settings so that you manually provide the actual ISP DNS server IP addresses to the phone even if phone get's the IP address via DHCP (=automatically).

I'm really surprised how vocal you guys are and how much details you lack to report the issue. I mean basic info would be nice router model, wifi type, encryption type etc.
I have had this invalid server name issue only in 2 places and its not pointing to the N8. These relate to a wifi spot and once in another office in a different country:
1. In different regional office : key was really long, so i made a few mistakes here n there. After 2nd time keying in the key everything is ok.
2. Wireless hotspot (only 1 place) : sometimes the connection gets overloaded by leechers other times its just something wrong with the router ( so many brands). I noticed that most days the connection is ok. but the ratio is 1 / 20 times i go there i will get this invalid error and only those days when you notice there are a million (pun intended) people with their laptops on.
In all said and done, I've never had any wireless issues that I can remember of to date. And so far in all my nokia phones I have used with wifi from n95, n82, 5800, n97 mini, n900 and my n8 now , i've never faced any issues with Wifi which is really surprising to read in this thread.
