I have the exact same problem on the exact same phone with the exact same firmware. Problem came with the latest firmware so i guess it is related to that.

Reset the 5800. Dial *#7370# 12345 reformat, you'll lose all data. Make a backup first and restore without the settings.

Seriously, is that the only way to solve the problem??
I've got the exact same problem, updated to v50 today, and it started searching for wlan constantly. Sure, if I connect to a wlan it stops popping up, but then I have to have wlan turned on all the time, and what if I don't have an available wlan-connection?
And by the way, it's really annoying...

Removing battery or disabling WLAN/WiFi is not a solution. Here is why it's happening. There are two reasons: 1) some web based applications were set by default to allow to update their contents automatically; or 2) Messaging applications were set to update/synchronize email boxes or multimedia messages automatically. To resolve #1 issue - verify each application settings that it's not allowed to update contents automatically. To resolve #2 issue - verify that under MESSAGING (where text messages, multimedia messages and email boxes are) are set to use access point AFTER CONFIRMATION (not automatically). Click on Multimedia icon and verify settings there. If you have any email boxes under MESSAGING - verify its settings as well.
If you installed additional application called Email for Nokia (it shows in applications as EMAIL and it is displaying your email box in HTML view) - verify its synchronization settings. By default it is set to synchronize all the time. You can disable that by choosing the time set to 1 minute only (from 12:00am to 12:01AM) or/and by changing its access point from WLAN/WiFi or Default connection to WAP services. In that case, the phone will ask you if it wants to connect to internet and you can cancel the conncetion.
In my case it was Email for Nokia stuff that I installed from OVI store (free). I just changed synchronization time from "ALL DAY" to 12:00 - 12:01am and rebooted my phone (switched off and back on) - and all became good.
If your were not successful by following the steps above, as a last resort, you can do the following. Backup your device (keep all stuff checked like contacts, settings, messages, photos and etc) to the PC using Ovi Suite. Then do hard reset (reformat) of your phone (you can google for instructions) to restore it to factory condition. Then do restore of all your stuff thru Ovi Suite except SETTINGS OF THE PHONE (uncheck that box). In that case, your phone will be restored and will have all your contacts and media files and it will also have all settings in FACTORY DEFAULT condition. At this time, phone is not configured with your WiFi and email boxes. You need to reconnect to your WLAN/WiFi. Then you need to configure your email boxes - one by one and rebooting the phone after each time you added email box or other software. As soon as you see that something is not right after you added stuff (another email box or some other software) - you can figure out easily where is a culprit.
If all is good, then do the backup thru Ovi suite (including settings), so it will be easier to recover from any error in the future.
And the last but not the least: go to Settings--->Connectivity--->Destinations--->Intern

For me it was Ovi Contacts that was the causing all the problems. I removed my profile (on the telephone) and the problems disappeared. Magic but releaving after some months of irritation.
