Nokia 5800 Settings

My Nokia 5800 has all the settings from Vodafone NZ on it and most of them work ok, I have also added wireless LAN, the settings I have are:

WLAN

VF NZ Internet (INTERNET)

VF NZ PXT (MMS)

VF NZ Gateway (WAP)

The problem I have is that when I check my e-mails I would like the option to check via WLAN if I'm in the office or VF NZ Internet when I am out of the office, I have selected in the e-mail settings "Default Connection" and it ask me what connection I want to use to retrieve my e-mails, either WLAN or WAP but selecting WAP outside the office don't work, I need to select VF NZ Internet, is there a way it can show the WLAN & VF NZ Internet as 2 options instead of WLAN & WAP?

I rang Nokia, which told me to reset everything, which I did and still didn't work, spent hours reconfiguring my phone and Vodafone NZ said it was a phone problem and to call Nokia.

The guy at Nokia said it should show Always Ask, I said Default Connection is the option I have for it to prompt for connection.

I hope someone can help.

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

Go into Settings > Connectivity > Destinations.

Scroll to the "Internet" destination but don't enter it.

Options > Default connection.

Set the e-mail retrieval's access point to "Default connection".

From now on, it will use the WLAN whenever in range and fall back on the packet data connection if not. By default, you will be asked to confirm that you want to use the packet data service. This can be prevented - ie. the phone won't ask before connecting to VF if you're out of range of your WLAN - by going into the Internet destination above, scrolling to the VF NZ Internet access point and doing Options > Edit. Scroll down to "Use access point" and change the setting from "After confirmation" to "Automatically".

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

Fire up the browser, then:

Options > Settings > General > Access point

Set it to "Internet" instead of "Always ask".

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

How do I know if my phone is connecting to VF Internet or WLAN? does those funny 2 lines that show up under the reception meter means I am connected to VF Internet?

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

I don't think it is working right, missing a step I think. In Destinations I have the follow

Internet (with 2 access points in it) WLAN and VF NZ Internet

Multimedia msg. (with 1 access point in it) VF NZ PXT

WAP services (with 1 access point in it) VF NZ Gateway

I'm stuck at where you say goto Internet but don't open it.

Cheers

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

Is there a tick next to "Internet" in your "destinations"? If not, go into "Options" > "Default connection" and tap twice on "Internet". The tick should be there now.

Next, fire up the browser. It doesn't matter if if it comes up straight away with an online web page or if it shows your bookmarks first of all. Simply press "Options", then "Settings". Tap on "General". Sett the "Access point" setting to "Internet".

As for the various on-screen icons, pages 22-23 of the manual (this is the complete manual, not the condensed manual contained in the box) describe them.

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

Yes, there is a tick next to Internet and I have set the browser access point to Internet but when I connect to the web it says connecting via VF NZ Gateway.

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

If you're using a bookmark then edit that bookmark and make the default access point to use is also set to "Default".

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

In that case, set it to "Internet". I'm betting it's set to "WAP services" right now.

In any event you seem to have a branded handset. Mine is a generic, SIM-free handset. In that very same list I have the options "Default" and each one of the access points present in my destinations. I'm also using firmware V20, so that might be a possible explanation for the difference if you're still on V11.

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

Seems ok now thanks, it was set to Internet.

When I got the phone last week I had V11 installed then updated to V20 and now running V21

Is there anyway I can change the link to nokia.com when you hold down the 0 button on the keypad to something else? or is that hard coded in to the phone?

Maybe I should try and grab the same firmware you are using and see what happens

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

That's a browser setting.

Fire the browser up and then go into Options > Settings > General

Set "Homepage" to "Bookmarks" instead of the link that's there now.

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

Yeh thanks for that bro, that works ok now if I hit the Web icon, but I am referring to when you hold the 0 button down on the dialler, it goes to a Nokia site http://mobile.nokia.mob/ui/appmanager/m/d?ar=APAC&co=NZ&la=en&te=5800

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

Interesting. It does something similar here.

I can't see the page that it goes to in any of the bookmarks so I can only assume that it's something that's hard-coded into the phone. Up until S60v3FP2 the browser would just open on the homepage you'd defined in the settings when you hold down the '0' key. I (incorrectly) assumed S60v5 was the same since I never actually open the browser that way - I have an icon in my shortcuts bar.

Re: Nokia 5800 Settings

thanks for the tips above.

I think it covered all the faq's for internet/browser.

But it would be nice if we could change the '0' key home page =(
