Dear Palmy,

Your problem could be the order you start the software/drivers and connect your N95.

I've had a similiar problem. Every time I connect the N95 before starting PC suite windows does into to ites "detected new hardware" and setup a brand new "GSM modem". It call the new modem something like "GSM modem #3". Unfortunately PC Suite was setup to use "GSM modem #2". And connot figure out that they are in fact the same thing, thus you have to go through the setup in "Connect tO Interinet" within "PC Suite" every time.

The work around is always start up in the following order.
1. Start PC/Laptop
2. Start PC Suite
3. Plug in your N95 and wait for connection to PC suite (you should see your SMS inbox on top)
4. Click on "Connect To Internet" within PC Suite (The first time you will need to go through "Setup".

Hope this helps

I gave up on USB connection after a while so I am not sure if that is the problem.

I do, however, continue to have problems with Bluetooth until I traded in my N958GB to a E71.

I have had less problems since then.

With E71 though, it's similar problems but less frequent.

My Samsung i780 has far less, if not, none of the problems mentioned and connecting at 3.5Mbps via bluetooth. Too bad the battery doesn't last half a day when I do DUN over bluetooth.

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

Hi Mansoor;

Just wondering if there was any progress on this topic?

Also, maybe a bit of a dumb question, but do i need to buy a HDPSA sim card to run the N95 at its full speed?

thanks

Scott.

If you have a USIM that grants you access to 3G services then access to HSDPA should be automatic.

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

Thanks for that... I've just read this on another forum... feel a bit daft for even asking as it should be common sense really!!

People on ebay are trying to sell 'special' HSDPA sims..

I have just updated my cable driver to 7.0.14.23 and still no joy with the speed issues :smileysad:

That doesn't surprise me in the least. When you look at that and the sheer number of fake phones (and other goods) on sale at eBay, and the fact that eBay does little to curb the market in fakes in the name of "protecting consumers' right to choose", it seems to me that eBay is nothing but fraud central and a place to avoid at al costs.

Another question... Does updating your firmware make enough of a difference to do? i am stuck on v11 at the moment.

I doubt it makes much difference as far as the HSDPA connection is concerned, but it would be a good idea to upgrade if you can for other reasons. V11 on an N95 is pretty old. I should think that most operators have released more up-to-date versions by now.

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

Hi scott ,

I managed to develop a driver but when that driver loads up in the OS & registers N95 in Device manager then it comes up with unknow error .

As i mentioned earlier i am not a developer or software programmer.I just worked very hard on this over the months but no success .

I have moved on now , i have a HTC touch Daimond & it has HSDPA 7.2Mb/s & connects with computer at this speed.
I am still looking forward to buy a N96 which has HSDPA limited to 3.6Mbps but lets see if the correct driver has been developed by Nokia.

Scott if you have any USIM in your phone & your Cellular provider provides the HSDPA via the cellular netwrok then you will be able to use the service. Some providers in UK are limited to 7.2Mb/s but in future it will be increased when they will implement HSPA.

Kind Regards ,

It already does connect at the right speed. Only Windows thinks it is connecting slower and tells the user what it thinks.

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

Hi guru ,

Its not the OS or HW which is wrong , its the driver programmed by NOKIA for N95.

Windows is a very famous OS , espically Windows XP PRO which cant be wrong becuase Millions of Users have used it & tested it over the years .

Anyways lets get back to the point , the issue is not about what speed the OS WIN XP Pro displays on the screen , the issue is about the transfer speed between the N95 & the computer .

Lets say if N95 is getting 3.6Mbps from the cell pole , it transfers that data to the computer via USB cable , when that data goes to the opened port available for the N95 modem , it reduces it down because the driver is written to transfer the data at only 921Kbps to be proccessed by the CPU ( which is beyond this topic).

Kind Regards ,

Mansoor

No it isn't.

It is still transferring data at the correct speed. My whole point is that it only SHOWS that it is connected to the USB host at 921kbps, which is misleading.

You can never expect an overall throughput of 3.6mbps because HSDPA is a burst technology.

Well different people have different theories. Please learn first about computer speeds , buses & processing of data & then present your theory about the Celluar modem data speed when connected with a computer.

Kind Regards ,

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

To simplify this issue, i'll give a practical example: I downloaded around 53mb mcfee update using N95 modem connected to laptop via cable in 3G coverage area. The download process lasted around 60 mins. If i was downloading a 53mb file that is compatible with with the phone directly to the phone memory in a 3G coverage area, i'm sure the file would be fully downloaded in less than 3 mins. Same case would apply if i downloaded the file directly to a laptop, but this time using the huawei E220 modem connected to the laptop.

All the best to everyone trying to write a better driver for N95 cable.

 Hey Guru,

Thanks for your explanaition, the dude attacks me today, but i'm using a E-71, but under Ubuntu, and the data modem of the equipment report that 9xxx.xxkps is the maxium speed (using , it's possible that it's a hardware problem?

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

If the 3.5G icon doesn't appear in place of the 3G icon then there is no HSDPA coverage where you are in the first place. and any connection speed above 384kbps is pointless.

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

Hi,

Actually, if i use the native explorer from my e71, i can see that the 3.5g icon appears and i can dowload at HSDPA speed, still in the same geographic place, i connect my cell phone trought USB cable (icon in widows show me 460kbps speed) i'm agree with this forum, there is a problem with the modem HW in my cell phone, as can you see using Linux Ubuntu 8.04 the problem it's the same...

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

For all the naysayers out there who remain convinced that the connection speed displayed by your settings are the actual speed at which the phone connects to the internet, I offer the attached screenshots for your consideration.

The settings do indeed say that the phone connects at 921kbps:

This image shows data throughputs at rates of 130KB/s fairly consistently, sometimes up to 152KB/s. Even not accounting for protocol overhead, 152KB/s means 1216kbps. Accounting for protocol overhead the figure is nearer 1400-1500kbps:

This is despite the settings claiming that the modem is only connected at 921kbps.

Don't believe everything you see in the settings. Take measurements and then make your mind up.

Re: NOKIA N95 HSDPA MODEM DRIVER The TRUTH

you are correct

I have the same problem with 6120c phone which has 3.6mbps HSDPA according to Nokia tech Specifications. 6120c HSDPA Usb modem is connected with speed of 460.8Kbps.
