Hi everyone,
This will be my first post on this forum and the problem with which I came here is as following:
I got a brand new N8-00 phone from Orange and I really enjoy this phone so far, but what bothers me is , when I use my phone at home to browse internet, check my email or whatsoever - after few minutes my laptop doesn't get any connection with internet same as my phone and only after a hard reset on my homehub router I get my internet back, it all works very well as long as I don't use my phone, when I go online on my phone it all happens again.
Please help,
as I really want to keep this phone, but it makes me a little bit worried that I can't use my Wi-Fi at home in order to keep my phone fully loaded with apps and all the good things you get with internet.
Thank you

Yea it's a BT homehub, I never faced that sort of a problem with my nokia E71, I still have it and when I browse internet on it, things run quite smooth, I haven't tried to put any changes into configurations on my HomeHub , i'll try to do it today after I got back from work and see if that helps then I'll get back here with a feedback , thanks for your replay

Sometimes draft "802.11n" WLAN routers (I assume BT Homehub 2 is such device) might be more stable if you simply disable the 802.11n support from router and instead use it in 802.11b/g wireless mode.
You could at least try logging in to your router's web configuration pages and changing it's wireless mode from "B/G/N" to "B/G" and see if that helps at all.
Just a wild guess but since E71 does not have 802.11n support in it and N8 does and you stated that the router was more stable with E71, disabling the 802.11n from router settings might be worth a try.

You might need to refer to your BT Homehub 2.0 router's user manual or some other support documentation in order to get started, if you are not already familiar with configuring your router's settings. Look for either printed or PDF user manual came with your router or go to BT support web pages and download the PDF manual (link).
Use a PC that is connected to the Homehub via LAN and log in to router's management web pages using a web browser on the PC. Based on the user manual it seems that you might be able to connect to your router's management interface by entering the url: http://bthomehub.home in to your web browser. If this doesn't work opening the management web pages by using the default IP address of the BT Homehub 2.0: http://192.168.1.254
Refer to the sticker behind the Homehub 2.0 (and/or user manual) in order to find the "admin password" that allows you to change settings of the router after you have connected to the router's management web pages.
On the Homehub 2.0 management web page (connect via PC's web browser ):
Go to "Settings" and enter your router's admin password.
Go to "Advanced Settings" and again select "Continue to Advanced Settings" to confirm.
Select "Wireless" and "Configuration"
You should now be at the page that shows advanced wireless settings of the Homehub 2.0 including channel SSID, channel selection, wireless interface mode etc.
In order to disable 802.11n mode and use the router in 802.11b/g mode do following:
Go to "Wireless interface type" and select "802.11b/g" mode instead of default "802.11b/g/n" mode and press "Apply".
After router management page shows that "Apply" was successfull you might still want to restart (power off / power on) your router to make sure that new settings were really taken in to use.
Hope this helps. Please note that the instructions above are based on the BT Homehub 2.0 related documentation floating around internet and instructions might not be absolutely spot on but should hopefully give you some idea how to change BT Homehub 2.0 wireless mode from 802.11b/g/n to 802.11b/g.

I think that at least some of the older Orange Livebox 1.x models required them to be put in special "pairing" mode in order to be able to connect new WLAN clients to the router. There was practically a MAC address filtering enabled on the router by default and "pairing" was needed (in addition to configuring client with approriate security keys) so that WLAN MAC address of the new WLAN client device gets added to the router's MAC address filtering list, allowing this particular client device to connect.
Try looking into your router's user manuals for set-up instructions. If it's an Livebox router there might be an separate wireless "pairing" button on the router that you need to press before trying to connect your N8.
If there aren't any "pairing" buttons on your router then you could login to router's admin/management web pages via your PC (see user manual for IP address and username/password) and try to check from there if MAC address filtering is enabled and add your N8's WLAN MAC address to the list of allowed MAC addresses.
You can find out WLAN MAC address of your N8 by using the code *#62209526# ("dial" this code on the phone)
If your router is more recent Livebox 2.0 with 802.11b/g/n WLAN radio and you can actually get "connect" your N8 to the WLAN but are still having slow or intermittent WLAN connection then you could try disabling the 802.11n support from the router by configuring it's WLAN radio to operate in 802.11b/g mode instead of 802.11b/g/n.

Hello
I have the same problem, albeit with an O2 N8 and an older BT Homehub connector. However I've been into the router admin and its already set up with 802.11b/g, so there seems to be a more serious problem perhaps?
I'm taking it into Carphone Warehouse this pm to see if there's any solution. Otherwise byebye N8 I guess.

Hello,
I'm also a happy N8 owner in France, and I had similar problems when trying to connect it to my Orange "Livebox 2" router. However, I finally succeeded, but I made several changes so I cannot really tell what is the good one. However I switched from "b/g/n" to "b/g" and renamed the wifi network from "Livebox-aec1" to "TiPlouz", so... You can try doing the same changes at the same time and you may enjoy a normal wifi setup... ![]()
Bye,

If using BT HomeHub V2.0 Type B WLAN router, it's worth checking if there is a firmware update available for the router. There have been some reports of issues when using 802.11n mode with this router which might get solved by updating to the latest firmware version.
If there's no firmware update available, forcing the AP to 802.11b/g mode may help (as suggested above).

Just wanted to say diabling 802.11n as described fixed my problem.
FYI, I had to power off/on BT homehub to take effect.
I have the new BT Infinity homehub.
Thanks!

If it's any help for anyone, I just did a wee bit of jiggling with the BT HomeHub manager and changed the settings from b/g/n to b/g, and now I have access to the web via my homehub on my N8! Yessss.
Prior to this I was being given 'Invalid Server Name' as a response by my phone wehn trying to browse the net, but this wee change has made all the difference, and for now I shall be keeping the N8.
Thanks for all the helpful advice.

When I connect my N8-00 to my BTHomeHub2, it usually works for a while, and then stops working, giving the 'Unknown server' error. When this happens my computer's Wireless connection stops working and tells me there is an unknown network with no connections. Logging onto the HomeHub reveals no wireless connections. This corrects itself after I press the reset button on the side of the HomeHub, and everything works again - for a while, but crashes after prolonged surfing with the N8-00. I've been resetting the hub several times a day.
When the hub is reset the Nokia appears as 'Unknown-e4-ec-10-eb-12-37' so clearly it's not being recognised by the HomeHub, which recognises all teh other devices on the network. The N8-00 is recognised by my laptop as being on the network - the ethernet side of which is unaffected.
The HomeHub firmware is 4.7.5.1.83 (Type B), and hasn't been updated (Last updated unknown), and I'mcurrently waiting for BT to get back to me so I can ask about the latest update to see if that helps.

Is the router using MAC filtering?

If updated HomeHub2 Type B firmware is not readily available then you can solve your problem by simply switching your router to 802.11b/g WLAN mode instead of the default 802.11b/g/n mode.
Detailed instructions how to configure WLAN mode of the BT HomeHub 2 have already been posted in this thread. See this message (link).

It depends how the router works. I've got a new one, newest firmware... after disabling 802.11n and using only 802.11b/g the problem is solved, at least at home. J

tried disabling the 802.11n & everything's working fine now

This also works for me using a Fritz!Box, but I wouldn't call it a solution, it's just a local workaround. I don't expect global service providers or local coffee-shop owners to reconfigure their up-to-date-routers to accomplish a bug in Nokia's cell phones.
The nokia comment from is
"The issue is related to a WLAN chip used in these access points. To solve the problems, it is recommended to upgrade the access point firmware to the latest version.
If there is no firmware update available or the update doesn't help, the workaround is to disable the 802.11n mode and force the access points to use just the 802.11b/g mode."
But as all laptops, net-, note- and whatever books work with those routers with 11n, the problem is not the router, it is the cell phone.
So Nokia: Please either make 802.11n configurable (to be disabled) in the phone menu or fix the bug.

Of course you are right! It's a work around but no solution. But as usual Nokia says it's not us, it's the router, the car kit, your provider ...
Just ridiculous! J.
