E60 & WiFi

I have E60 ver. 1.0610.02.15. I checked WiFi on it. It works only with Open WiFi access points and doesn't with any security options. It can't be connected to access points with hidden SSID with any applied security. Is there anybody who successfully found the way to connect E60 or N80 to secured WLAN? Please let me know if there is success story about that. Please provide such examples.

Re: E60 & WiFi

I have the E61 and initially had the same problem. The phone won't show you hidden networks, but you can create an access point with the hidden SSID. Go to Menu->Tools->Settings->Connection->Acces Points->Options->New Access Point->Use default settings. In there you should choose
Data bearer as Wireless LAN, and then enter the hidden SSID in the WLAN netw. name field. Then change Network Status to Hidden, set up your security, etc.

I did that for my hidden home wireless network (Linksys) and eventually got it to connect.

Re: E60 & WiFi

I checked this settings with Avaya AP-7 Access Point & Marvell WiFi adapter on home PC. WiFi doesn't work with applied sequrity features on both.
Are there any ideas how to solve such problems?

Re: E60 & WiFi

I'll try to help. What type of security are you using on the Avaya and Marvell units? WEP? WPA? 802.1x? We use 802.1x at my office with LEAP, and I eventually got that to connect. I use WPA personal with a pre-shared key at home and I got that to work also. Both networks are hidden.

These new Nokia devices are far from straight-forward to set up the network, especially a secured one, but I'm pretty sure there is a way to make it work. Nokia could definietly take a few lessons from some PC wirless card manufacturers (e.g., Orinoco) on how to make an intuitive interface for Wi-Fi setup.

Re: E60 & WiFi

how simple does it need to be?

you have two ways of setting up a network, you can go to menu - connect - connection manager - available wlan. in there highlight your network and press options - define access point. that does it for you automatically.

the other way is to go into menu - tools - settings - access points - options - define new access point. just make sure the connection type is set to wlan and fill out the required info.

both of these methods are rather fool proof and are discussed in the manual for the N80

Re: E60 & WiFi

Thanks for your attempts to help me.
Office:
1. SSID: name_company
Type: hidden
Authentication: WPA-PSK
Cipher: TKIP
Passphrase: ******* (i know what does that mean)

2. SSID: company_name
Type: hidden
Authentication: WPA-802.1x, LEAP, MS-CHAPV2
Cipher: TKIP
Radius server authentication. It acts for this profile and all devices, connected to the LAN. It works fine for PCs and AVAYA IP phones in the same LAN and WiFi area.

Home:
Checked all variants. Works with open type only.
The activation WPA-PSK with TKIP caused Windows XP crash. It seems like manufacturer driver problems. I checked latest updates on Microsoft and Marvell and found that everything are outdated at all. Probably I need to take the different type of WiFi adapter for PC.

Thank you for help.

Re: E60 & WiFi

Hello,
Also, I have some issues to connect to hidden SSID using the LEAP or PEAP,MS-CHAPV2 protocol.
I have tried several configurations but I still have the message "unable to connect".
Is there a way to get a log in order to try to understand qt which step the connection is not working?

Also, how do set up a name for your device in the WLAN?
For example, if I looked to attached devices using my router, I'm going to see my computer name but nothing for the phone...

Re: E60 & WiFi

A lot simpler than you make it out to be! It's a pity that the usually intuitive Nokia menu system on other Nokia phones seems to be missing on this new breed of phones, especially in the WiFi setup area.

Unlike a PC, these Nokia devices don't display hidden networks when you search for available WLANs, so the first (and easier) method you mention doesn't work.

So we're forced to use the second method. I have successfully used this second method, but I can empathise with those that are confused; the Nokia menus are inconsistent with WiFi standards and also not intuitive to navigate.

Example of inconsistency: Wi-Fi networks can be set up to use WEP data encryption and 802.1x simultaneously (as is the case in my office). Why do Nokia menus force to choose WEP or 802.1x as mutually exclusive choices? If you're not a networking guru, how do you know which one to choose? You end up wasting time trying to setup WEP only to find out that you really should have been trying to setup 802.1x.

Example of non-intuitive menu: You go through all the items shown on the access point menu setup screen (even going into the security sub-menu) and you think you're done. But you're not. You have to remember to hit the Option key and go into otherwise hidden Advanced Settings. You need to do this because the default Nokia settings have not been compatible for both of the secured networks that I had to setup. Why in the world isn't Avanced Settings simply listed on the same menu as all the other items for setting up the network connection? Then at least people would be inclined to go in there and try different things until they get it to work. See Intel's PROSet Wireless or Proxim's menus for examples on how to setup a simple intuitive access point menu structure.

Besides, even if we get the connection sorted out (as I have), there can still be "connection" problems: I have successfully set up my E61 for WEP/802.1x LEAP connection at my employer and WPA-personal on my home WiFi network(confirmed by checking active connections on my E61 after connecting), but my phone still can't access anything on the Internet via either secured WiFi. Every PC (running with lots of different kinds of WiFi cards by the way) on either of these networks has no trouble accessing the Internet with the exact same settings, so the problem seems to be either with Nokia's compatibility, or with the Nokia setup. And we're getting zero help from Nokia on how to troubleshoot the connection.

Re: E60 & WiFi

as far as i am aware, nokia wifi devices need the SSID to be visible to create the access point.

i am not sure if you can hide the SSID after and it will work, but to create it it must be visible.

whether this is a shortcoming in the setup provided by nokia or not, i dont know

Re: E60 & WiFi

I contacted with Nokia Service center where I got the explanation that this bug and all other which were described in this subject will be, probably, solved in new updates. And now that is not possible. I hope that somebody who has closer relationships with Nokia could explain us more details.

Thank you.

Re: E60 & WiFi

Thanks hkrodin for your inputs... I hope this will be fixed soon.

I don't manage to connect to the LEAP network also, even if I got the LEAP network on the network list. (When I want to connect with the browser, I got the list of all the connexion and the LEAP network that I have configured is on the list. Not the same things for PEAP)
According to some guides, you can put the domain name in front of your ID. (realm\userID). Maybe this would work for some other people... (Not me...)

Also, if you request to prompt for the password, you have a limited time to enter your password. It's quite difficult to enter 10 completely random chars...

Did somebody have tried with another applications?

Re: E60 & WiFi

Let me to introduce the success story for one part of this conversation . It now works with WPA-PSK. I had a consultation with AVAYA engineer who recommended to use 802-11b only for this purposes. So, Nokia E60 works with AP-7 with hidden SSID and WPA-PSK security authentication. This week I and AVAYA engineers will test Nokia E60 with AVAYA SIP server. I'll report about results.
And there is no positive results for WEP, TKIP, LEAP, 802.1x authenticaton.

Re: E60 & WiFi

I have another success story about LEAP...I managed to get the Nokia E61 working with a LEAP connection.

Basically, my settings are like that:
WLAN security mode should be 802.1x

When you have to configure the LEAP (option/configure when EAP-LEAP is highlighted), I have to put the username with the domain name in front of it.
So username has to be (domain)\(userid)
(\ not /)

Also, it looks like it's difficult to get the settings accepted by the browser. I think I had to put prompt password to "yes", try with the browser, then put back to "no"...

LEAP connection is now working perfectly (I get a small lock next the WLAN icon)

Re: E60 & WiFi

To clarify a little bit ...

I have successfully connected WPA/Personal (pre-shared key) on my home network, and WEP/802.1x/LEAP at the office. I too get the small lock symbol next to the WLAN connection symbol for both connections. It seems like I went through a few attempts to get them to connect (prompting for passwords, etc.), but they finally did connect. That's not really the problem I am having. After I connect to either wireless LAN, I cannot access the Internet from either connection. On my home (WPA) network, I discovered that I could connect to things on the network (e.g., the routers). But to connect to the Internet, I have to plug my Linksys wireless access point directly into the cable modem, bypassing my Linksys (wired) router. There must be some setting in my router that the Nokia E61 doesn't like, but I can't see what it could be. All the PCs that go through the same router have no problem accessing the Internet, and they all have the same settings (automatic IP address, etc.). I can't do this experiment in the office as I would take down 150 of my co-workers, but I suspect it's a similar problem.

I have no problem connecting to the Internet via an open, unsecured WiFi connection.

Re: E60 & WiFi

Do you have any proxy settings? Usually, a proxy is used in office places. You can change the settings in the advanced settings section (option/advanced settings in the WLAN settings screen)
Unfortunately, we cannot specify an automatic script for the settings. Also, it could have been nice to have a little bit more flexibility to set the proxies (if some addresses need to bypass the proxies)

My configuration is just wireless router hooked to my ADSL box. I haven't done anything in the settings, and I was able to connect without any issues. I got more problems when I tried to assign a fix IP (to open ports for the VOIP) I finally gave up...

Re: E60 & WiFi

I don't have a proxy server at my home.

We do use a proxy server at work, and from the beginning I setup that particular access point to use the proxy server, but it doesn't work.

I have more or less given up. If Nokia doesn't come out with a firmware upgrade, I'll putting this phone on ebay and either buying a Windows-based phone, or going back to my trusty 6820.

Re: E60 & WiFi

Hello!
Mine E60 works with static IP on WPA-PSK with hidden SSID successfully on AVAYA AP-7 Access points.
There is a problem with 802.1X/EAP-PEAP/EAP-MSCHAP.V2 authentication with DHCP settings and static also. E60 doesn't want work with these settings.
As I promised, we checked in AVAYA center with AVAYA engineer how E60 works with AVAYA SIP server. We found that there is a problem to begin usage of IP telephone service. E60 always sad that craeted profile "Not registered". And don't like to act with WLAN network although WEB-browser works fine in the same time.
AVAYA took a timeout for identify what's a problem with E60. Some terms on Nokia setting don't correspond to AVAYA terms.
I hope that it will take not a lot of time for AVAYA.

Re: E60 & WiFi

I'm one of those who bought this brand new Nokia E61. I'm able to access the Internet through WLAN at home (WEP). However, I can't get it working through EAP-TLS or LEAP at my office WLAN. I tried all combinations of parameter settings I can imagine. For LEAP, I tried the following settings for the new access point: • Connection name: "WLAN Company" • Type: Wireless LAN • WLAN network name: "COMPANY" • Network status: Hidden • WLAN network mode: Infrastructure • WLAN security mode: 802.1x WLAN security settings are as follows: • WPA mode: EAP • EAP plugin settings: EAP-LEAP (deactivated others) • Configured „EAP-LEAP“ as follows: • User name: My ID has the format firstname.name@country.company.com -- I tried this format, and alternatively also country.company.com\firstname.name - neither works • Prompt password: Tried "Yes" and "No", neither works • Password: My LEAP password When I try to connect from the E61, I get the error message "WLAN - No connection. WPA Authentification failed.", in all cases. I'm connecting perfectly through LEAP from my Windows XP notebook to this LEAP-based company WLAN. Help is greatly appreciated. M.
