Hello again everyone! Here’s an interesting one i cannot work out!
I have an N97 and when im at work i connect to a wireless network on my phone.
I go into Settings>Connectivity>Wireless LAN and select the network required. However, when i leave the office, my widgets go offline, i cannot browse the net and i constantly get an error saying cannot connect to WAN. SURELY there has to be a way i can set it to connect to a wireless network when possible and if one is not available to connect to the standard Vodafone one without me having to manually do it...I have downloaded the auto wifi apps from the app store but they make no difference.
Any help will be highly appreciated!

Most of the time for the browser it asks but the widgets freeze and my phone lags when i leave the wireless area.
Its very annoying!
I thought minimum the phone would have an option to search for WLAN and if it isnt available it will connect to 3G on its own!

Hi,
I have a similar problem with a 5800, I can connect manually to a WiFi connection at home, fire up a browser and it immediatemy chooses the phones 3G connection, never even looks at the Wi Fi. Some apps give you the option or choice, others dont.
Is there a setting somewhere to set the preference order or allow you to choose which network to use ??
TIA !

5th Edition and 3rd Edition FP2 phones have a Destination functionality (a group of prioritizable access points) where user can prioritize different access points(i.e. connection profiles) on within a certain "Destination" (e.g. Internet). Typically Internet Destination would have user's WLAN access points defined as a higher priority and cellular packet data access point (3G/GPRS) as a lowest priority connection method.
To prioritize access points (on a 5800XM) go to Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Destinations -> Internet -> highlight the access point you want to priorítize and select Options -> Organize -> Change priority -> click on the approriate point of the access point list to move the selected access point to this priority.
Another thing to check is the "Default Connection" setting of the phone. Go to Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Destinations -> and select Options -> Default Connection. Here you can define what is the default connection. You may be able to choose between Always Ask, Ask Once or you can select a certain specific Destination (typically Internet) containing all your predefined access points (both WLAN and cellular packet data) in priority order. Note that some phones (N97 ?) might not provide an "Always Ask" Default Connection option.
It should also be noted that some applications have their own settings and preferences for connectivity (either by selecting a Destination or specific access point) yet other applications may work by the "Default Connection" mechanism of the phone settings.
Built in Web browser on the phone has also related setting:
Go to Web browser -> Options -> General -> Access Point and choose either Always Ask or select an Destination (typically internet). If you set browser to "Always Ask" it should show you a list of currently available connection methods (shows the highest priority available AP of the Destination) and prompt user to select connection every time you start up the connection from within browser by selecting a bookmark or entering an URL.
Note that in case there are multiple access point available within a single Destination at the time phone prompts user to "Select connection" and the one offered by default is not what user wants to choose then there is also a chance to select "Options" -> "Select access point" that shows a list of all currently available access points for user to choose from.

Very good explanation. Still, I'm confused about which destinations to use.
Why are there several destinations (Internet, WAP services, undefined)? When would you prefer one over the other? I've put all my access points under WAP services, which I also made default, so that WiFi access points have higher priority than Packet data. In general it works very well, so that it automatically chooses Packet data when WiFi is not available.
If I had put all access points in the Internet destination, would it have made any difference? When would it be a good thing to have access points spread out in different destinations?
