Hi, as a 5800 newbie I seem to have got myself into a bit of a pickle :-(
When I enable maps (or the camera wirh GPS enabled) it can take a bit of time for it to get a fix initially.
I had previously disabled "Assisted GPS" in the interests of cost - but now feel that it could be an advantage to have it on occasionally.
However, with it on it doesnt seem to make any difference and I am not seeing any data activity in the log (and "maps" shows no data in the tiny icon at the bottom left of the screen.
I am saying "yes" to "go online?".
I vauguely remember deleting some profiles at some point to do with data :-( Could it be this??
If so .. is there a way to restore them??
Any help appreciated.
TIA

Should have added - its a 5800XM with the latest firmware.
Very happy with the phone - if only Nokia would put the connectors on the BOTTOM of the unit, it would make the use of cradles and car mounts so much easier.

Hi softfoot
This Nokia resource may be of help:http://europe.nokia.com/A41437130
You can enable "Assisted GPS" feature here, although you also need to ensure that it has a valid network internet access point defined.

Yes, that is how I am enabling it.
As I said before - tThe problem is that it doesnt seem to make any difference - I have a feeling it is because I deleted some data access profiles.
Is there a way to restore them??

I am too a newbee and have found out almost similar problem. After, I bought the phone and after inserting SIM card, I started browing through applications. When I was at Maps, the system asked me if I wish to go online then ? When I clicked "yes", it connected me to the Map position on the serverby downloading some data (through GPRS). Since I realised that I have very little money left in my prepaid account (Idea is really bad in this !), I disconned map application. I inserted a new SIM card later and also used to connect to GPS through WLAN (which otherwise works perfect), but I failed to get my online position after umteeth attempts. I guess I should reset the GPS to original condition by some means ?
Is there a way ?

use these settings and get fast gps tags and positioning..
first do these steps and restart your phone..
1.go to settings
2.go application settings under phone settings
3.now open positioning settings
4.there change positioning server address to smpl.google.com
5.restart
thats it..you'll have better gps than previous ..its more like the best one...
