POP port charging

Just to help clarify issues with the pop port charging. All pop port equipped phones (except 6630) CAN physically charge through the pop port. It is hard wired in parallel to the normal charge socket. If you plug the pop cable from the car kits, including the CA-55 adaptor, directly into the phone then charging takes place, by the way, I have tried this with nearly every single Nokia pop port equipped phone that I can think of.
The problem arises when you try to use the cradles! For some reason best known only to Nokia not all cradles give the correct information to the phone about what is plugged in! Some phones report "accesory not supported" and therefore charging is not allowed by the phone, not that it cant. A future firmware upgrade may solve this in the future. Some phones simply do not charge, this may be poor cradle design or simply a faulty cradle.
Either way its further complicated by conflicting information on the Nokia website.
If you are having problems, then plug the cable directly into the phone WITHOUT THE CRADLE to see if its charging. If it is then your issue is with the cradle not the car kit. If it reports "accessory not supported" then a firmware issue needs to be resolved. If nothing happens at all then the car kit is faulty, not wired correctly or may not be a genuine Nokia kit or cable!
I would be delighted to hear of a Nokia model that wont charge through the cable and I can check with my own if you wish but I have not come across one yet, except 6630!

Re: POP port charging

[ Edited ]
Excellent clear post. Thankyou. (Its a pity other threads degeneratted)

Perhaps the best point you have made (as have I) is conflicting information/answers from nokia official help lines. (yes it will/no it wont..... and in my recent experience many more no, absoloutly not, than yes)

A number of people including nokia (and myself) have said that (for instance) that the 6280 wont charge in a carkit and that its CR43 wont alow charging.

I have now proved to my satisfaction that everyone who said it wont charge (including Nokia AND myself) are wrong.
I now have a 6280 in a CR43 cradle and the phone charges.

ps I hope that this thread now ceases so it retains clarity.

Re: POP port charging

I have just purchased and fitted a ck-10 kit along with a CR-23 for my 6020. All works ok from a handsfree point of view but will not charge. As you suggested I have tried connecting without the cradle but no charging happened either. I tried a 6100 without the cradle with the same result. The kit was sealed when I received it so it should be genuine. As the handsfree works I would also presume that it is wired correctly. Next I am going to try the passive cable connected to a 3330 to see if it charges. Any other thoughts.

Re: POP port charging

To carsound,

I find this very interesting as all the other posts and Nokia as you said say NO.

I will shortly be upgrading to a 6280 from a 6230i but need charging in the car.

At present I have a ck-126 with antenna coupler and plan on what I have read on moving to a ck-7w with pop-port. What car kit did you get it to work on.

I still have my old ck-91 and some folk say I can use this with ca-55 but the ck-7w looks like my only choice. I don't want to use bluetooth as I frequently drive to and from Scotland to England.

Thanks for a good post,

John

Re: POP port charging

Joe,

I'm having exactly the same problem, but with a 6233! I haven't splashed the cash on the CR-56 yet but I'm using a genuine cark-91 and Ca-55 cable! Can't get the phone to charge! My old 6230 works fine but my girlfriends 6230i won't charge either! Is this a ploy by Nokia to stop us using old car kits?

I've searched everywhere with no joy! Please help!!!

Thanks :smileysurprised:)

Re: POP port charging

Rich
Took the phone back to vodaphone service they had it for 4 days to upgrade the software i got it back and the charger not supported came up as before so now they have it again to try and solve it. will keep you posted on the outcome and how they cured it (if they do!) I also tried a 6230i and that works ok! as with other pop port models.

Re: POP port charging

Have just 'upgraded' from 6310i with Cark-91 and interface lead to E39 BMW. The previous set up worked perfectly, radio mute, sound through hi-fi, steering wheel controls, contacts list on sat nav screen etc., etc.

After the upgrade (new 6288 phone, new CA-55 cable, new CR-43 cradle all from the local Nokia shop, so are genuine!) now nothing at except except radio mute. No sound through hi fi, no charging, no contacts list, no steering wheel controls, nothing. Some 'upgrade'! In fact no sound at all unless I disconnect the speaker connection that has worked perfectly for the last 3 years. It will work with the standard Nokia supplied speaker for the Cark-91.

The Nokia website confirms that my new set up is all compatible with each of the components and the Cark-91.

Does anyone else have the same problem, and hopefully the solution!

Re: POP port charging

I have exactly the same issue as Joe

I have recently upgraded to a 6233 from a 6310i.

The 6310i worked perfectly with a CARK91, CA-55 cable and MBC-15s cradle (all genuine Nokia). I got my 6233 and purchased a genuine CR-56 cradle at great expense and have a charging issue.

The phone says "charger not supported" when connected via the cradle and ALSO when directly connected to the cable

I have tried upgrading firmware but there is no upgrade available.

So the Professor who started the thread is not correct.

Annoyingly, my phone provider - Orange refuses to send me a new phone because "they didn't supply the phone kit". I told them till I was blue in the face that it was not the kit but the phone and they refuse to budge. I am not happy with their customer service at all.

One other thing, the most recent PC suite upgrade doesn't work with the 6233. You need to downgrade to the 6.81.13.0 version

All in all not impressed at all by the 6233. :-( A shame because it looks great and Nokia used to make a great product.

If anyone has any bright ideas I would love to hear them

Re: POP port charging

Sorry in previous post made a mistake. I upgraded from a 6230i not a 6310i (that was my earlier phone and don't I wish Nokia still made it)

Re: POP port charging

Not sure if this is a good place, but I have the same problem, just without a car kit. My phone has rejected it's charger with the message "charger not supported". I checked charger on other phones and it works fine, tried other chargers on this phone with same result. I have pwoered down phone, removed battery and swapped with another one, same result. Also the USB cable returns similar message. Installed software version supplied with phone has no update. This phone has been working fine for about 3 months now before this problem. Nay advice or ideas. Battery is basically flat already.

Re: POP port charging

The Nokia 6280 will _not_ charge when using the Nokia CR-43 (cradle) and/or with the Nokia CA-55 (Cark-91 to pop port convertor). I've verified this personally, and have received an email from Nokia support confirming this. There is a charging connection (the exact same as on the actual phone itself) on the bottom of the CR-43 which you could attach a charging wire from say a cigarette lighter, but its not what I was expecting and I'm rather annoyed.
What is most frustrating is that my old 6230i will connect to the CA-55 and charge correctly. And as I said above the phone _will_ charge (via the pop-port of the CR-43) if you connect an external charging wire. But if the 6230i will charge this means that power is being supplied correctly to the pop-port. So both the phone and the cradle are specifically stopping charging via the CA-55. (but the cradle will route power to the phones pop-port from an external supply). Madness!
I've only just received both parts, but my current plan is to open the cradle and rewire the power-in from the CA-55 to the charging connection (and hence to the pop-port which connects to the phone).
