Hi,

This might be a bit long sorry. But I want to try and explain everything the first time around so that any feedback given can be done with all the information in hand which may be useful.

I was using my second N95 Ive had from o2 the other day.

Everyone was fine until I was looking through my inbox.

Then all of a sudden the screen went off! :(

The display sometimes flashes on now and then but otherwise its off.

Ive noticed that when the screen flashes on the display/background is sometimes upside down.

It also kind of switches colour / between themes when I get a glimpse of the screen.

Its so annoying!

Does anyone know why this has happened?

Does any of the problems sound familiar?

I tried a factory reset and a deep reset but someone on another forum said that he has heard of others having this problem before.

Apparently there is a problem with the cable between the slider and the phone. I had the phone just over 28 days so I cant get a replacement.

Just went to the nearest Nokia service point and there is a 3 day backlog. Hopefully the engineer will be able to fix it there. If not Ill be without my N95 for 14 days!

Now my now problem is..

The day I got my N95, my N80 started doing something similar..

When it is on, the screen repetitively flashes on and off really quick. Ive tried a hard reset on there and that has done no good either..

Im going to try and update the firmware now.. possibly may even try out seeing if putting a nokia firmware on it will sort out the problem.

Im starting to think that this could be a common fault with Nseries phones though? Unless it is just the slider cable.. Does this problem only appear on slider phones? If so it might just be the way I am using it?

Any input appreciated please?

Thanks

Nish :)

There have been a few reports of ribbon cable problems with both the N80 and the N95, but I wouldn't have said it was a common problem.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is anything you can do other than return the phone to a service centre for repair then wait the 14 days :(

I got my N95 back.

All they needed to do was change or fix the ribbon. But they replaced the lcd, changed the slider, and flashed the phone.

The slider is of poorer quality. And some of the software isnt working :( (the shortcuts for the direction button is weird).. the left navigation is supposed to goto Messaging but instead goes to o2 online!)

Your phone could be branded and this is what happens when they remap the keys to the operator instead of using them as they were intended.

I can not advocate it, but you might want to look into removing the branding via alternative methods. (Please do not ask me how. Do a search)

.. or you could just remap the buttons using the Standy By settings which you get to by going something like (I don't have an N95, so this is from the N80):

Menu .. Tools .. Settings .. Phone .. Standby mode

Then change the setting for the Left and Right selection keys.

I thought this was the first thing everyone did when the got a phone anyway ;)

It depends on the level of branding. Vodafone basically locks the keys to Vodafone branded services. If so, there is no way to undo this outside of de-branding the software.

The menu key sorted itself out thankfully. Not sure what the deal was there?

Heres an update on what happened..

Right. Bit annoyed at this.

From what I gathered the only thing that needed to be fixed was the ribbon.

Now I got the phone back yesterday and they changed the lcd, the slider, and flashed the phone (not sure why they flashed it because it was the same version I had on previously)..

BUT! They gave me one of those dodgy sliders that click when I press the lower right hand side in. I dont like it :(

Anyone else had this happen to them from a Nokia Service Point?

I think they have took my good slider for themselves! (or that could be the paranoia)..

Did they need to change the slider to change the ribbon?

I went back to the store this morning.. Only to be confronted by some sales assistant with the worst attitude ever. She was the only one in the store not wearing a name tag which was probably a good thing as I would have reported her to head office!

So condescending.. gave me a weird/snotty look and said "so you just read it off the internet did you".. "the engineer would know better" blah blah..

Then she went on about how its only a small thing making me feel guilty about trying to get my phone fixed!

Carphone warehouse is definately not getting any business again from me. The rest of the staff at the Aintree store seemed to be fairly decent in the past but that woman needs to be sacked! (or retrained)..

In the end the engineer came out who was pretty helpful. He said that the display was faulty. And he had to change the whole slider as the lcd was the faulty part, and that Nokia do something with the screws on the handset so he had to smash it out and replace it with a new one. weird.

In the end I just decided to leave it. Its really annoying me again now though! Arrgh. Has anyone actually argued point blank for them to do it again?

The engineer said everything was fully accredited by Nokia and all that. Looking back I should have just asked him to redo it!!

Are there any other official Nokia repair centres that will do it without making you feel like you are in the wrong other than carphone warehouse in the uk?

I hope their managing director is reading this!
Message Edited by nish_uk on 14-Aug-200709:10 PM

Since you mention Aintree the only one I know of nearest to there is in Liverpool city centre (another carphone warehouse store), unless you want to go to birkenhead or chester in which case they have fonebox stores which I find are a lot better.

The trouble with carphone warehouse and like kinds is they would rather SELL you a new phone instead of repairing one, i've had issues with staff in the aintree store before with their "holier than thou" attitude, even when trying to negotiate a deal they wouldn't accept anything less than the top tier packages and/or rubbish phones. Fonebox work slightly different they don't tend to deal with the full on sales stuff, if you asked them if they could repair your phone they are more helpful.

I guess I have got a sure-shot solution to this problem. but I think none of you will be happy to know it.

This is what I did, in one simple step:
Since my screen went off when i dropped it on a hard floor, I dropped it again (though 2-3 times) and whoooosh, the screen came up back again.

Guys, believe me, I tried all possible suggestions, taking the battery off, memory-card out, but none worked. and this seems to be the BEST one, which works always..

happy dropping !!!!

Hmmmm .. not sure how viable dropping would be as a long term fix ;)

I guess you have a dodgy connection somewhere and dropping it happened to - probably temporarily - re-establish it. A better bet would probably be to have an engineer locate and fix it.

(same as OP)

My phone now has some amazing screen effects such as Invert, Pink Scale, Red Scale, Up-side-down mode, and a fantastic fader effect.

It's a bit of an off fault. It only happens when i press the left, right, up or down keys. (Each key makes a different screen effect)

Gonna call CPW and see how long their waiting list is.

Right

The carphone warehouse are an absolute joke.

Im making it my mission to actively tell people to avoid them and go elsewhere.

I went to the liverpool branch yesterday and told another sales rep about the problem.

The person told me that he didnt think it was worth it. I persisted. Then he said the engineer was on holiday for two weeks and he'd have to send it off.

Fine I said. Send it off.. then he said that if he'd send it to head office they would send it straight back and they would charge me £45 for looking at it! That rep said it was common for all sliders to have that lose click, I kept telling him my past ones didnt but he didnt want to know.

Why to them tosser sales assistants have so much of a problem? Its not going to send it off to get my slider fixed or get me a proper one is it!?

Are there any other Nokia Repair centres?

That clicky slider is really annoying. Plus im seeing lots of reports about people being unhappy with it and returning the phone. Im probably going to get rid of this handset soon and can see this problem being a factor which might prevent me from selling it.

Am I being to fussy here or not?

Hi all,
My N95 started the same behaviour today afternoon.
i was triyng to send a text message (this is becoming a pattern as far as i can tell) when all of a sudden the screen started to change colours and also moving to the left with each press of the buttons, especially the directional buttons (up down left right).
As time went by and i was trying resets and removing the battery etc (not a format of the phone though) the ecreen problem became worse and worse up to the point that it gone black but completely off, you could see the backlight on round the edges of the screen if look at an angle. After a while the screen remained off so i talked to the shop that i bought the phone from. It's a WIND shop here in Athens Greece and the guy (decent guy i think, he has been very helpful) told me to leave him the phone and he would take it to Nokia and he will notify me what the problem is although his first impression is that it is a firmware problem. I guess i'll have to wait and see.
If i have any news i will inform.

One of my colleagues has had this problem too.
He got his phone back after 3 weeks only to discover it had no keypad.
To get a new keypad took only two weeks...

I am really dreading having to cope with this nokia trouble. Can anyone recommend a nokia store in Stockholm?
