N97 NAM with crash issues... Anyone else?

My N97 arrived today and aside being fairly impressive (and having a manual marked as a draft copy for some reason), it's been... A pretty unstable experience. I'm having sporadic but fairly frequent crashes, most of the time either fading to black and rebooting, or having some sort of freeze so severe it causes the image on the LCD to just fade away before going dark and hanging there until the power button is held to force it off. I've done a format through the home screen, in case some of my older apps were giving v5 headaches. Doesn't seemed to have helped just yet. Anyone have an idea if this is hardware or a bug in the initial firmware?

A fair bit of troubleshooting leads to two causes:

 

Applications called from the widget UI seem to cause simple reboots at various times.

Apps calling GPS cause the much more dire crash I mentioned above. Still not sure whether either of these are the unit or just little firmware glitches.

Did you happen to put a microSD card from another phone?  If you did, that would be the cause.  Happened to me yesterday.

Running v10.2.012. Reflashed it last night, even.

 

And yes, I put in a card from my E71 at first. The first troubleshooting step I tried was to remove that, thinking perhaps something on the card (specfically Garmin Mobile XT) was causing the problems. What did you do to resolve it? Two hard resets and a reflash later and I'm still having the issue. Seems to be related to use, the more/longer I use it, the more likely it is. Whereas it can go all night sitting idle.

Same issues here. fresh out of the box and i am getting constant crashes. so much so that i cant even use it. **bleep** nokia.

wow here is something im not going to be looking forward to dealing with once my n97 arrives. :smileysad: thanks for the heads up will report once i get mine. i excpect it might have similar behavior.

cpiddy, are there any patterns to your crashes? Certain apps, usage patterns, symptoms, etc... Your firmware rev would be useful as well.

 

I still could be a random case of bad hardware or unique usage patterns... Obviously if it turns out to be a widespread issue, we'll hope for a firmware fix quickly, but I wouldn't say it's that just yet.

its the stock firmware that all n97's will have until a new one is released. it is pretty random, sometimes it seems to be when i try to access the internet and sometimes when i open the key pad.it just crashed while i opened the guitar game.

i stand corrected in that case, i am going off of what the nokia rep had told me and off thier website. so you are lucky and i dont know how you got it as when i ordered mine on wed they were still saying that it will be few more days before the white one starts shipping. lucky dawg you !

This is the fairly visually impressive crash I've been seeing with GPS apps. Using Ovi Maps 3 here, but that's just what I was using here... Can even happen in the camera app with GPS on. Note that the error occurred before I loaded Maps 3, so that's not a cause.

 

Apologies for the quality of course, I'm more a stills sort of guy. :smileyhappy:

cpiddy, you might want to try turning off anything that uses positioning, see if that helps your stability, did for me. For example, the Accuweather widget loaded by default will try to get GPS position. Be nice if we could track it down to positoning as the cause or if it just seems that way.
