@phatdumi, isn't it obvious by now?  You've ask the right question...  now for the answer ask 'what is the difference between the N97 and N97 mini?...

Answer: The N97 mini has 512Mb phone memory to store all those extra new goodies in V2.0.

Now the Nokia software technicians have been instructed (with the threat of job loss), to magic the 256Mb NAND on the N97 into 512Mb as it is on the mini....

They are working night and day on it.. since they can see the commercial implications of producing this new invention, just think you the N97 user will be happy AND Intel / Samsung / LG / Kingston / Simpletech / Transcend / Samdisk and all the other memory manufacturers will pay handsomely for this new invention.

The only problem is that it's not working just yet, so you will have to wait a little longer for your v2.0 firmware.  But don't worry, Nokia announce for Oct or "Coming weeks' in the latest reports, so it won't be long.  I bet they are really wishing that they didn't mix those N97 with the N97 mini videos in that demo now.

LOL watch this space hey! Nokia are onto a winner there. But seriously if the update does not roll out before the mini rolls out then to me it will serve as confirmation that the N97 is indeed a pile of plastic c**p.

Hit Kudos if I Helped out.

That's the LG chocolate you're thinking of, isn't it? :smileyhappy:

Regarding the comment on the British Market being less tolerant of bugs, I'm sure I've read elsewhere that the firmware update we end up receiving is exactly the same as that received over in Europe, with all the same flaws and bugs, which is what makes it so insane that GB is treated differently from 'Europe'.

Meanwhile...

Oh, for the record, I love my Nokia N97.  It really is like having a PC in my pocket.

It's just frustrating that when I go to show it off to my friends or family, my "Wow!  Look at this..." turns into, "Well, it did it last time, so it'll do it again - eventually... any second now..."

I changed my contract from Orange ("Why are you changing, sir?" "Because I have terrible coverage in my area." "Oh that's surprising, sir, as we're winning awards for our coverage!" "Then why do I need to stand 1/2way up my stairs facing West and very slightly South to get a signal?" "Oh.  Goodbye sir.":smileywink: to Vodafone and so got the phone free as part of my change of contract.  Yippee!  I imagine I'd feel less forgiving towards Nokia if it weren't for that.

Meanwhile, is there a section in the forum where tips and tricks are given on how to tweak the Ovi PC Suite?  That's what really gets my goat, as the moment it or any other Nokia software load up on my PC (e.g. Nokia Music), my whole computer experience suddenly resembles swimming through treacle.  Synching contacts on my N97, loading maps to it or doing, well, anything at all really, rapidly becomes a pretty hellish experience.  I keep thinking I've installed a virus which is killing my system.  Do I need to upgrade my old P4 2.4GHz to a Cray Supercomputer or something?

Kudos!

I got a funny feeling that v20 has been released.

I plugged my usb lead in and the little tray icon canme up with a message saying "New Software is available for the phone" I clicked on it and it took me straight to NSU and went through the normal process but didnt show me an update. (it was not an update for NSU itself - I got that last week)

I am guessing that it is up on their server but is being rolled out to different Product Code variants.

There was a rumour that it would be released to the Middle East first then across Europe. I do hope I am right, I have a non branded Europe Handset that normally gets updates early so fingers crossed.

I just heard that planning for v21 has started, and that applications are going to be moved into Mass Memory by default, thus clearing room for much better RAM and memory management in general.

:smileyvery-happy:  Is that good enough sillbit?

I have a friend who had the LG Viewty.  Now while my N97 is streets ahead of the Viewty, the 120fps camera rather caught my imagination.  After all, who can argue with, um, 'people' caught at 120fps as they jog? :smileywink:

Oh yes, that's another new feature of the v21 firmware update we're getting on December 23rd as promised by Nokia and learned by me through a friend of a friend who was on a chat with a member of Nokia support, honest.  Upgraded camera firmware to support night vision pictures and 240 fps.  At last, we'll be able to capture those scenes of crossbow bolts going through apples in dawn attacks!

Meanwhile, I tested my Ovi Suite again last night, and everything turns to treacle /only/ when I start up the Nokia software.  And it disconnects my net connection for a while, too.  And it then told me there was an Ovi Suite upgrade for the PC and proceeded to (eventually) upgrade from v.2.0.0.10 to v.2.0.0.10.  Um - what?  Oh, and the NSU that asked to be installed also said it was v.2.0.0.10, so I'm not surprised some people out there are getting confused.  But nothing told me that v20 was ready for my handset, so I'll just stay here and hop from leg to leg while I wait. :smileyhappy:

Don't hold your breath. When I enquired about when V12 would be appearing in the UK, I was told "shortly". It appeared 4 weeks later, for 2 days, then vanished again, then came back only the other day.

Nokia use vague (even meaningless) measurements of time because their firmware department doesn't appear to be managed to a deadline or schedule... Which is why when the N97 came out we got the previous nights untested firmware build V10.

I'd love to work for them, I'm a techie and I always hated deadlines. However as a customer it's shocking service.

Interesting that UK TV's Watchdog program did a piece on the iPhone sleep -> coma this week. I guess Apple managed to **bleep** off one of their researchers. Pity none of them were brave enough to buy a Nokia.

I don't think I'll ever be an early adopter of Nokia phones again. I had it with the N95, gave them a second chance and they've done it again with the N97. Despite the appearance of the fruit themed competition, which should have made Nokia pull their socks up a bit, they seem to have actually got worse.

Yeah, thats the lesson we all have to learn. Never again! I'll buy a Nokia device with less than 6months. I pay the money and I want the final product, not interested in being betatester...

The iPhone is another pile of poo.

You will only realise that if you had to use it on a daily basis. All these smartphones are trying to do too much, on top of that every single user, service provider, country, region  is configuring the phone in a differrent way. There are millions of permatations there. Then we got all the different applications on each individual handset.

It would be impossible to build the perfect handset, whichever one you choose will be the best of a bad bunch.

There are people screaming about the iPhone too!

This however does not excuse Nokia from its resposibilities. There are known issues with the N97, Nokia should have resolved these more promptly. It should be a priority for them.

When Carphone Warehouse launced their broadband service (talktalk) in the UK they messed up big time.

In that business for the first time, More customers signed up then they prepared for - It was a living nightmare for them and their customers. The difference is that their Chairman would write a blog every day, sometimes twice a day.

He openly admitted that they had messed up, then he personnally took charge and set about putting things right. It took a while but he took time out to keep his customers in the loop. He explained the reasons why, the methods of correction, he apologised everyday, did his upmost to keep his promises.

Nokia should take a leaf out of that book.

It would take the N97 Firmware manager 5 minutes, 3 times a week to just keep us up to date.

Nokia say they do listen to these forums - Please listen to this post. It makes good sense.
