Finally I have discovered it but Nokia needs to provide a patch to solve this issue.
Firstly, if anyone is having problems installing the cable driver and keep ketting this error message during installation:
"The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name"
It is because this file is conflicting with windows:
nmwcd
How do I know?
Well, if you have already attempted installation of the PC suite and it failed with the above error message. By going to:
setupapi.log
you find something like this:
#-035 Processing service Add/Delete section #E279 Add Service: Failed to create service "nmwcd". Error 1078: The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name. #E033 Error 1078: The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name. #E275 Error while installing services. Error 1078: The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name. #E122 Device install failed. Error 1078: The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name. #E154 Class installer failed. Error 1078: The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name. #I060 Set selected driver.
By going to regedit or windows search files/folders
search for "nmwcd" there are many many windows files that use it
Nokia need to solve this issue but creating a patch of somekind
But that is what is causing the problem and someone here who knows Nokia technical support need to raise this issue with them, cheers
Anyway, I made fast check in my register (WinXP) and all "nmwcd" texts are related to Nokia USB driver. (There are "nmwcd" files in C:\Program Files\Nokia\Connectivity Cable Driver\ folder so that "nmwcd" is used in Nokia USB driver only)
So, I think that your problem is that uninstallation for old version of Nokia USB driver has failed. And now Windows can not load new Nokia USB driver in use (old one is somehow in use).
Could try this: 1. Disconnect your phone from cable 2. Run Re-install_Nokia_USB_Driver.bat file 3. Connect your phone again to cable
I do not have any ...\Nokia\Connectivity Cable Driver\ folder at all but I have found many nmwcd* entries in the registry and on my hard drive. Shall I remove all such entries manually? Are they all related ONLY to NOKIA? Thanks
If it help, here is the error log file using setupapi.log

So could try this: 1. Uninstall Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver and restart PC 2. open regedit > delete "nmwcd" keys 3. Run repair to PC Suite (it should install USB driver again)
Be careful when you delete something from register!!!
Could you try this: 1. Remove phone from cable. 2. Open Regedit 3. Open key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\ 4. Select key: Vid_0421&Pid_0508 and try to delete it. (-> If you don't have permission to delete that key, select Vid_0421&Pid_0508 key > Edit > Permissions > Select "Everyone" and activate "Full control" > OK and try to delete that again) 5. Connect you phone again to cable.
Hi i,m glad you have managed to understand this as i could not.I had de-installed re-installed e.t.c and was still getting this problem ,I thought it was something i was doing wrong, buddy
I went to Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ just like you said and I removed "nmwcd" and "nmwcdcj" as well as Nokia USB Modem and Nokia USB Phone Parent.
then I went to regedit, did a search for NMWCD and E65, there were still 2 files, I removed them then uninstalled PC Suite completely (coz it didn't work first) and restarted PC and reinstalled it and job done, it detected it.
Thanks very much coz I never never about Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
but yes it does the trick and after 4 weeks of runnng around, it finally works.
Club Nokia tech support UK are useless, they knew nothing about this. You call them up all they tell you is simple stuff like use PC Suite cleaner etc.
Technically, they don't know that much.
Thanks again. Now I can finally enjoy PC Suite 6.83!
